Is anybody willing to share some advise on hunting the Missouri River
south of Washburn North Dakota...According to the web site NoDak Oudoors the resident hunters do not like out of state hunters esp. those bringing boats.

Well too bad for those Resident hunters. If you've got your nonresdient lic and are hunting public land and are following all the local State and Federal laws. I've got no time for hunters or anyone who thinks that they own property that they don't. I swear that putting up no trespassing signs in Geary is a sport. "OK Jethro lets see how many sings we can put up in 30 mins" I'm looking at one spot where a guy might own two feet of ground between where a road right of way ends and the waterline is, and we're going to be denied access to an extensive marsh/pond complex for that. We also have a few issues here in NB over Riparian rights along the Miramichi river. Here is a pic of where I talking about. I'll stop the rant here.

There were always some local phenomena around the Dakotas. In SD if we had plates from the wrong county or be from east river versus west river they could look at you "wrongly".

In ND it seems that there were some offended by the large number of parties from "MN". There are new regs for waterfowling for non-residents in place in ND now due to some of those pressures from non-residents.

The Pheasant hunting can be good around there too- or nearby at least.

There are a-lot of monies coming in from non-res hunters out there so I wouldn't worry about rumors.

Don't let the guys on NoDak Outdoors scare you off. There's a few on there that talk tough, but like a lot of sites on the internet, one or two bigmouths seem to think they're talking for everybody when they're not.

Once you get to ND you'll find that the locals there are nicer than anywhere in the country. We've been going for 7 years now and will probably never go anywhere else. One night the first year we were out we had all the local farmers over to the farmhouse we were renting for a dinner. For the cost of a couple cases of beer and some duck fajitas we now have pretty much exclusive access to roughly 25,000 acres. They always ask the guy we rent from when the "PA guys" are coming back.

One thing I do agree with the NODAK guys with though is not shooting the roosts. Just be careful if you're hunting the river that you're not busting the huge flocks on their night roost. That just chases the birds completely out of the area and messes it up for everybody. there's nothing wrong with hunting the river as long as you're just decoying birds passing by, or else birds coming back to loaf for a day roost.

Other than that I can't help much because we haven't hunted the Washburn area much.

Good Luck,
Kirk

I agree with what kirk said. A lot of those blowing smoke over there are from the bigger ND cities and many country folk view them in the same light as NR, sometimes NR are even thought of better. Most people I have encountered out in the country are very freindly and willing to help in any way.

The concerns over boats, is what Kirk pointed out, that they don't want people shooting roosts. I agree with that but I like to diver hunt so sometimes I find myself on a roost, but I try to hunt it with minimal impact to the mallards and geese.

I know nothing of the river hunting out that way, except its usually good when everything in the pothole region is froze. I think big geese are the main target.

good luck
