Hunting with a stranger (or what boat should I use)

I'd take the bigger of the two boats. I am in a similar situation where I have a bigger boat (14' Lund) and a smaller boat (15' Hoefgen). If I was going hunting like you are hunting and all I had was the Hoefgen, it would get to be a major chore to hunt out of that boat every day. While I like hunting out of the Hoefgen more than the bigger boat, there is so much more involved to go hunting with it. Plus the fact that I have to limit what I take along with me on the Hoefgen hunt (weight, carrying capacity, room, etc...) this restriction would get old after a while. And since it is not a trailerable boat, I wouldn't want to be driving through every State with a car topper. Too much can go wrong.

If I only could take one boat, and I was hunting as much as you are going to hunt, I would take the boat that will provide the least amount of headache to hunt out of. Like others have said, if you are hunting with others, they will probably have the boat for two. If you hunt solo, you will have to find the places where the TBD will work. Not that there is a shortage of those.

We just ignore the WI conceal rules so you don't have to worry about that.

For those that might not be familar with the Canvasback boat. I don't think too many guys are car topping this boat.

It may well turn out that Bill's choice of boat will change from trip to trip (unless he plans to cover all 48 states on the same trip) based on the locations for that trip.

If you were hunting all 48 states continuous is a logistics planning exercise....lets do the math...

48 states
1 day to travel
1 day to hunt
then off to the next hunt

a total of 96 days....

no regroup, no pause, will take a bit over 3 months

Estimate 48 licenses at $75 each = 3600 bucks

$100.00 a day for expenses = 9600 bucks - motel, gas, food, misc junk, shells, boat stamps and so forth

A total of $13200 and one tiered person at the end of 96 days

Now add up the time it will take for preparation and add that to the 96 days

Of course that is just a rough estimate...

An interesting mental exercise....before you even decide what boat to take

It is painful to think that you are quite a bit low on the license estimate :(. It adds up quick.

Utah's Lic until recently was 40 bucks for a non-resident to hunt bird... you can get one in Idaho for about 125 as long as you do not hunt the first few days of pheasant season..

so I made a guess...and Tod is probably right, it is low

Not correcting you Matt, more like just ruminating on how darn painful expensive they are these days (we won't even talk big game, which you know a whole lot better than I).

I know you weren't Tod I was agreeing with you...the whole outdoor/fishing/hunting thing can be financially painful at times...so I try to budget and choose what I do

I see no itemized expense for beer? It can't be included as misc. junk, it could be food I guess but still, beer does demand its own itemized line. Geez......

Hope he has a Prius as gas is going to cost an arm, leg, and left nut to pay for in the near term.

OK we can add a refreshment item to the $100 a day cost --- say 20 bucks for beverage of your choice?

So now we can say ---

96 days will cost now $11520.00

the total is now

$3600+$11520.00...

oops that is wrong Tod thought that the lic will be more so...

lets say

$5000+11520.00=$16520.00

GULP!!!!!

Maybe I best add another 10 per day for more beer to drown my sorry because of the cost......

Looks like you have a bit of research to do on license cost. Here is a start.

New York non-resident license cost for small game only
$ 85

I jsut don't see how the TDB is that big.. it is a 14 classic right? Don't put the canvas blind on it... it is only about 20" about the water... draft is only 4" And if that is to high of a profile... just don't hunt out of it...

As for the sticky fingers... a lid yes.. but otherwise.. sheesh.. it must suck living out east! Stealing from someone with a gun... and a dog.. nearby? that is just DUMB!

I have no clue as to the average...Utah a 3 day lic 25 or 65 for the season... Idaho ranges from 35.50 - 157.75 depending on length of lic

I originally guessed a 75 average..

Tod thought higher...

So your guess is as good as mine, as I could not find a web site that had a nation wide average.

Matt

WI 3 day is $55 I believe... Iowa... I think is $85 for NR.. but not sure.

75 is the least I've paid lately. AZ and MT, which I've purchased recently, are both at least 160, small game and waterfowl. SD is 114 for only upland, KS is inexpensive at about 90.

No matter what the actually cost it is not going to be inexpensive......wonder if Bill could find a sponsor... A firearm company? How about an outdoor show? Maybe a boat company? They could supply a free boat also (boat issue solved)....

OK that was a crazy thought....

Sorry for the seemingly blank post above. This seems to happen to me every time I try to quote a prior post when I reply. Perhaps I need remedial posting lessons.

Anyway, just trying to tell Hunting Dave I missed his post about buying a new boat, and wasn't trying to steal his thunder.

If you come down to the Gulf Coast, bring the TDB. It will be more useful for our sometime long runs, open water and large number of decoys (6-8 dzn).

So Carl, are you saying that because you won't have your boat by then? Better get on the stick! Lots of redfish awaiting you.

Trip.
