I actually saw some ducks this trip....

The past 3 years in a row when I made my grouse trip to Maine I brought a handful of decoys and some steel shot in case I saw ducks on any of the water in the area I hunt. Not once did I see a single duck on a beaver pond or creek. This year I left all that gear at home and sure enough ran into woodchucks, mallards, and a few black ducks. Go figure.

There's a lot of talk around the internet that their aren't many birds this year due to a wet spring, but there's absolutely none in my living room so I decided to give it a shot. Drove up spent three days hunting and camping and then a night in Greenville to shower and rest up before the ride home. Grouse were tough to come by but we managed a handful of flushes some of which yielded good shots and one of which I connected on. I talked to some guys staying at a near by sporting camp and they had shot 2 birds in 5 days so I don't feel bad at all.

On a side note, the Beaver are out of control were I was hunting, starting to flood over several roads. May have to take up trapping next year instead of grouse hunting!

Some pics...

First night after the long drive we camped at Spencer Bay. Saw two cows and a nice bull on the drive in, woke up to loons calling, and saw bald eagles.

Every year we stop and take a picture at this spot. The road gets worse every year, and there is a bypass around, but it's
tradition.

Taking good pics can be tough with a Labrador.

Every year we spend our last night camping at this spot. It's a nice spot to spend a night!

I need to edit out that one grass stem, but I never get tired of taking pics of this dog.

Nice trip, great photos
I guess you won't forget the decoys and steel shot anymore!

What great photos and a good trip.

I hunted many days and hunted hard never even firing a shot. I still don't regret any time I got to spend outdoors with my old bird dogs.

I enjoy your trip re-cap and pictures. Hopefully the lack of this year's birds doesn't deter you from going again. You can always go back to taking decoys and hedge your bets with gear for ducks and grouse.

Charles,

Glad you saw a few birds. It's been slow for me, but like you I've seen ducks so I chased them a couple of times. Nice to see the moose, were they in Lazy Tom Stream or along the road? Wish I knew you were in town, I was at Stress Free on Wednesday and Friday evening. Back to work now.

SJ Fairbank, I was at SFM around 5-6 pm on Friday. Just grabbed take out, if they still had outdoor tables I would have eaten outside with my dog. The moose were not in Lazy Tom stream, but further down the Spencer bay road. I should have dropped a waypoint on my OnX, but I got a late start from PA and I was fighting sunset to get to the campground and set up before dark. The first cow was right on the roadside when I came around a turn. Of course she came across the road in front of me and scared the heck out of me. As she ran into the woods I saw the Bull turn and run with her. The second cow was in a logged area just a little down the road from there.

The campground was very good, there was one trailer with no one at it, and some guys came in around 9pm and set up a second camp. Otherwise it was dead quiet except the waves hitting the shore, cloudy so no stars unfortunately. I packed up in the morning and headed north toward Golden Road and into the NMW. On top of Baxter St. Park/Silas Hill road there were a bunch of trucks and guys with what looked like big propane tanks, cargo net and a helicopter. Guessing they were going to airlift them into some remote camp or logging operation.

I was there a little after you, small world. Those moose are deceptively quick, and tough to spot in the road at dusk. For a real thrill, roll down the window and give the bull a series of grunts. Many times they're curious and walk right on over. Let them come close to test your nerve, but keep the car in gear. [:)]

You probably guessed right about the helo payload, they take all sorts of stuff into the north woods. In winter some areas are only accessible by snowsled or air. I believe they also stock trout from buckets under the choppers. We sometimes fly around looking for moose in the swamps during summer, or moose and deer when there's snow.
