I lost a good hunting partner yesterday.

The last 6 hunting seasons I had been doing a lot of hunting with an older gentleman. I always joked it was like hunting with a teenager, he always wanted to go hunting and he was always hungry. It was Paul's 89th birthday yesterday when they found him. We were planning to go out to eat at the VFW this week so I could buy him a meal for his birthday. Last Friday evening he and I took a little road trip to purchase a pick-up load of used Herter's decoys. He told me about scouting his hunting spot already and how much water there is in the wetland and the number of geese he saw. We were both looking forward to early goose season September 1 and the teal opener the following Saturday. He had just bought a brand new 9.9 four stroke for his fishing boat and hadn't had a chance to take it out yet. 89 is a good run and he was sharp and fairly active till the day he passed I sure will miss hunting with him this year.

Mike - Sorry to hear of your loss. I appreciate all the time you spent with Paul and, the time he spent with you. It is obvious you were blessed by it. I pray God will give you peace during this time. Savor your memories with him... Pat

Good morning, Mike~

What a wonderful example of a life lived to the fullest! I have been struck by the same trait with so many gunners I have known - or gotten to know in recent years through our documentary projects. Working on the next project, planning the next hunt, looking forward to tomorrow - they provide a good model for us all in our later years.

All the best,

SJS

I am very sorry for your loss. I am glad that you got to spend those years with your friend and that he was full of anticipation for the upcoming season at the time of his demise.

Mike,

Sorry to hear this. Through our conversations I knew how much Paul ment to you and you to him being able to get him into the field to hunt these past years. Good luck opening morning. I'm sure Paul will be with you in spirit.

Mike,

I'm sorry to hear of his passing. We would all be lucky indeed if we remained active and sharp up til our dying days and have a friend like you to take us out when we're old.

Dani

Money cant buy stuff like that, his passing sure hurts, but sure sounds like a huge blessing that you knew him and enjoyed life with him for the last 6 years. I am sure he was grateful for your friendship.

Mike, Sorry for your loss. Reminds me of my ol buddy Max. There were 20 years between us but that didn't matter a hoot. Most of his hunting buds had passed when I met him and it was like a new lease on life for him. We all gained and so did he. One night around a campfire we realized that between us around the fire waiting to hunt the next day there was almost 50 years. He is waiting at the Rainbow Bridge with all the good dogs we have known waiting to go again. 89 is a remarkable run and to be healthy to the end is such a blessing.

Mike, your hunting partner will be in that blind with you when the season begins. You were one lucky man to have met this impact player by the name of Paul. I was thinking how wonderful it was for him at that age to still be so anxious, excited, and looking forward to when duck and goose season started.

I'm glad for you and the special moments you must have had with him. Those are the special memories no one forgets.
Al

Wow...sorry for your loss Mike. 89 sure is a good run, I bet he had lots of good stories to tell in the blind. That is like losing a member of your own family when you're that close. Send our condolences from the Steffy Family.
Steve
