I love Hawaii!

Man you guys have a piece of paradise in this state. We got here about a week ago, stayed in Waikiki for a few nights, went to Pearl Harbour, and then moved to Kauai in Princeville. We snorkelled at Anini and Tunnels, saw a whack of turtles and pretty fish, and went back to do two dives at Tunnels. Meg is totally gotten over her fear of fish and got up close to a White tipped reef shark. Yesterday we took my dad up in a helicopter for his first time and had a look over this gorgeous island. What a place! I want to move here. We're headed to Maui for a week and then back to Canada. What a great place to end our trip.

Mike,
I had a friend of mine who worked in two states most of his life. He started in Alaska around the latter part of April and stayed there until late October. He then flew off to Hawaii where he stayed for the rest of the year. Told me that he never got tired of that arrangement.

The big Island has great goat and boar hunting and turkeys everywhere....not to mention outstanding fishing out of Kona...cant wait to get back there one day!

I was on Kuaui for a few weeks earlier this year doing some training with the guard. We didn't get much free time but I did do the helicopter tour. I talked to some locals and there is pretty good fishing in the streams for smallmouths and rainbow trout and peacock bass in the many ponds

I can just imagine the look on your dad's face as you flew around the islands.

My folks have been at Waikiki for a week and are there for a few more days.

Sounds like you're finishing the world tour with quite a bang. I'm looking forward to seeing more pictures.

Mike-

I look forward to seeing pictures. Glad that Meg has gotten over her fear of fish. It's a great place to toodle around in. I look forward to going back again one day. I had a blast there, though I wasn't there nearly long enough to get to see and do things. Take LOTS of pictures....perhaps the kids might enjoy a surf lesson or two :) I know I had fun surfing there.....

It sure is a good place for kids and adventures. Neither of them are much interested in surfing, which I think is due to a little excitement we had one day on the South China Sea in Dec. when Jane took a good tumble in the surf and came up streaming blood from both sides of her nose.

Mac and I got a hold of a sling style pole spear and have been trying to hunt up a fish but so far no luck. We can find them, we just can't hit them. Its fun to try though. There's a place to try right across the road and we have a kitchen so its pretty perfect.

I spied some troutish looking streams from the helicopter over Kauai the other day, but I understand the season is closed right now. It sure would be tough going hiking into some of those pools.

Here's a couple of pictures from the air.

awwwwwww surfing is great fun.....or belly boarding......

some neat pictures there...gorgeous island and water for sure....

Good luck on the spear fishing. I've never tried that. Someday perhaps

Mike,

If you are shooting at fish with a spear from above, remember to aim UNDER the fish because of the light refracting as it leaves the water. This is tough to do but once you hit a fish, it will click. Just trust in physics:)

I think fishing the Waimea Canyon would be a hell of a hike. Its fun to see the Tropicbirds flying in the canyon way below you from the highway. Did you try to hike to the Napali Coast in that beach shot? That would have been an interesting hike as well. Sounds like you have had a wonderful year so far. You better get home before the duck season and the first snowfall.....;-)

Great adventure Mike. I have been fortunate to make it to the islands a few times (bro-in-law was stationed there for a while) and by far Kauai was my favorite island. If I recall correctly, they have a law that no building can be higher than the surrounding palm trees. Not sure if that's island wide or not but thought that was a great idea.

Safe travels back.

Ryan
