I was really amazed that there seemed to be no Wings fans in the crowd. Usually they almost outnumber the home team. Must be a city ordinance against Red Wing fans there. I bet a puss hits the ice Sat.

I doubt many fans would sell their seats close enough for a wings fan to reach the ice. The fish markets won't sell them any octopi either.
I still have my fingers crossed for tickets to Saturdays game. It's a long shot but still a possibility. I hope the Pens keep the physical play high.
Wholey's Not Selling Any Octopus To Detroit Fans
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ¯ Wholey's Fish Market in the Strip District is known for being able to meet any Pittsburghers' seafood needs.

But as the Penguins gear up for the Stanley Cup Finals match-up against the Detroit Red Wings, one item has become taboo here in the 'Burgh.

Most employees at Wholey's are predicting the Penguins will win the Stanley Cup in six games. But they also say they are absolutely not selling any octopuses to fans of the Red Wings.

The tradition that started all this happened back in 1952 when a fish store owner threw an octopus on the ice to symbolize the eight victories needed back then to win the Cup.

The Red Wings won that year, so they have been carrying out the tradition ever since.

But if Detroit fans think they will do it next week when the Pens play at home, the people at Wholey's have other ideas.

"A couple of people from Detroit called asking if we did sell octopus," said Dan Wholey, "and I said, 'Well, we do, but I can't sell them to you because that would be disrespectful to the Penguins.'"

Regardless, if Detroit wants to bring their tradition here, they will have to buy the octopus at home. Meanwhile, Pens fans are prepared to fight back with some tricks of their own.

"We should have a Penguin run across the ice chasing an octopus on a string," said Mike Hartman, Wholey's employee.

Whoa! Tickets for that game would cost enough to fill up the tank on a Suburban! I don't think you guys will have to have an octopus on a string to see penguins "chasing" anything...... ;) Good luck on the tickets and if you get in...have a big sign with "DUCKBOATS.NET" on it so we know you made it.

I never could understand why anyone would waste a perfectly good Octopus. Throw out a flipping parsnip or something disgusting like that. This I would understand. :^)

Go Pens Go

Eric

No, you won't find many Red Wing's fans there. That's now the hottest ticket in town. In fact I know several guys that went up to Detroit to the game because they said it was easier (and cheaper).

Nice tuque (sp?) Jay!

How much were tickets to watch it on the big screen at the rink? Just think, 2 years ago you could buy tickets at the door and sit anywhere you wanted. Mario is still in my top 5 favorite players of all time.

When the Pens are away, you can go watch it on the jumbo-tron in the arena for $5.00. All the money goes to the Lemieux Foundation for cancer research.
When they're home, you can go outside the arena and watch it on a big-screen for free. I heard there were several thousand people there last time.

Yeah he's a class act. Between his back injury and Hodgman's, his career got cut in half, but he was a heck of a player. They had a cool stat on during the Eastern Conference finals, Gary Roberts came into the league in the '84 draft with Mario Lemieux, and Sidney Crosby's DAD. I thought that was pretty neat. Your Chelios is probably up there as well.....

All apologies to Mike "Doc" Emerick...I've been referring to him as Doc Elliot. That's a fishing client I've been dealing with so I had it on the brain. Just wanted to set the record straight....Doc Emerick is the BEST!

i didnt realize there were any hockey fans on here. i think wings in six. i havent had the chance to watch any of the finals games. once the two former tampa players (brad richards, vaclav prospal) lost i havent cared that much. i got a buddy thats a die hard pens fan and hes just about sick. cant get him to come hang out with us.

goooooooooo tampa.........next year.

eddie

WTF Ed....it should be illegal to root for Tampa if you live in Vermont! My GOD man!

Plus, didn't you play in the NHL? Ed Gagne....I mean that's a hockey name if I ever heard one. Gagne....Bruno, Simon...I'm sure there have been others.

Jeeze....I had a DU hog roost today at the gun club and I never did try to turn on the TV and see what in the hell was up that thing. Sure enough, I turned it on and it magically was tuned into NBC out of South Bend on the "aerial". So, about the time we're running tips and having a few beers the first period started and I was able to watch it. I headed home during the intermission.

GO WINGS!!!

jay not to burst your bubble but martin st louis is a former UVMer and so was eric perrin (with tampa when they won the stanley now with the atlanta trashers) these guys were the hay day of uvm hockey and my favorite players growing up. i have perrins autograph on a piece of paper from when he played for uvm. i saw him in walmart with his girlfriend and tore open a pack of pencils and a pack of paper and ran up to him. (i was 9 or 10 back then)

still have a soft spot for phili because of john leclair, whos family i know fairly well and went to highschool at our rival high school, bellows free academy in the next town over.

tampa for life..................but phili if tampa dosent make the playoffs. hahaha oh and because i hate the pens go detroit!!!!!!

eddie

oh and jay who should i be rooting for? the bruins........ i dont think so, what a joke. and there are far more montreal canadiens fans in the state of vermont then there are bruins fans.

eddie

I was thinking Montreal or maybe Buffalo. Tampa....don't seem right! Tampa = Bizarro Hockey World :o)

That a funny story about the Wal-Mart...right out of the movies.

Why don't you get off your butt and get the players some decent lumber? What's going on with all the broken and dropped sticks? Seems like they've set some sort of record already. I even heard a commentator say that somebody broke their stick when making a pass, net even a shot. Jeez.........

Bill, I cannot agree with you more. The stick issue is completely out of control. They are basically high-mod graphite fishing rods now and they simply can't handle the game. The players seem to love them for some reason. Brett Hull insisted on wood until his retirement two years ago and was very vociferous about his disdain for graphite shafts. I can think of 3 key moments the Wings had in the playoffs where sticks broke.
