ice auger help

I got a free gas powered ice auger today. I was talking to a buddy of mine at work and he said he had an old ice auger ( 5 years old) with not much time on it. He said it starts, idles and revs up to rpms well but once under load it dies. He said he didn't feel like messing with it so he bought a new one. What do you think the problem is- main jet clogged or dirty? I have not had the chance to mess with it .
 
You're screwed - it will never work. Send it on over to Woodbury and if I can't fix it I'll save you the trouble of disposing of it.

Have you checked to see if the choke releases all the way when you put the motor into normal running. I've had thatproblem on an older ice auger. As soon as a load was put upon it, it bogged down and died. Check the grease in the gear reducer as well. might be full of water or gunked up in other ways.

Like you said, the jets could be gunked up as well. If it is only while under load, remove and check the main jet as this is the one that comes into play at full throttle.

First I'd get a carb kit for it. I'm a mechanical idiot and was able to put one on my 20 year old auger last year. Made a world of difference and they are about $15 - $20. If your buddy didn't want to mess with getting a 5 year old auger working then I'd bet he let old gas sit in it over the summer, that will clog up something in the carb.
Second thing is to make sure the throttle is opening up enough. It takes a lot of rpms to keep it running while under load.
Third check out some local bait shops that sell icefishing supplies for information on small engine shops that work on augers. There are a lot of small engine shops that do tune ups on augers at very reasonable prices.

Last year my jiffy had the same problem. totally carb related. It would start, idle, but once under load it would conk out. Get a new carb.
