icy boat ramps and 2wd trucks

I watched John Livoti retreive his sneakboat the way he described this past season.... worked great. I was honestly worried about my truck taking a swim on the same icy ramp, I am going to find some heavy duty rope and do something similar next season on ramps like that....

This all assumes you don't have a tide!

Dave,

Thankfully Iowans only have to deal with the "Tide" that comes in a box and is in the soap aisle.

The flip side to this is when we get stuck on a mud flat,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, we would have a long long wait for the tide to lift us free from said mud flat.

Dave, you might not have a tide, but the Spring floods and levee breaks more than make up for it. I'll take the tides over that heartache all the time. Of coarse, when the tides change, and the ice is relocating all the decoys again, I will be cursing the tide!

Guys I greatly appreciate the feedback. That's why I love this site! I think I will go with chains seems like a good thing to have in the truck anyway. How hard are these to put on and take off?

Joe, not hard, if they are not all rusted up, have been adjusted for your tires, and you have practiced when you don't need them. They are hard to install when you are stuck! Get them now, and learn how to install them in shorts and a t-shirt, with a cold beer.... not in waders, with a flashlight and with gloves on!

They come in different grades ,for the amount of time you will be using them I would buy a standard set for the specfic tire size on your truck. Buy them now it will give you time to find the best deal and like some one else said learn to install them while the weather is warm. make sure they come in a storage tote . Mine fits behind my seat, F-250, when i need them it's just a matter of pulling the kit out ,everything is right there no missing parts. I keep a head lamp with the kit,it seems I only need chains when its dark ,which is all the time up here in the winter:)

Ryan,

I had a nice response all typed out and then hit the wrong key and lost it, grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Check out this link Peerless ,they make a very good product. I'd choose one designed specifically for truck tires and get either the standard twisted link or the V-bar links.

Once you remove the chains after using them be sure to dry them before closing them up in a plastic container. Rinsing them in fresh water is a good ideal also. Put them away wet with some added salt and you will have a rusted mass next time you open that container.
