If we keep getting frozen off the river.....

Ed, I saw a scratcher rig at Savanna years ago while ice fishing. It would probably be quieter than the air boats and much cheaper. I had 6* Monday when going to work.

You could come field hunt geese. It was about 21* this afternoon and 20-25 mph winds. Friday morning is supposed to be 2* about shooting time for the deer opener. Then 40's and rain Saturday and Sunday.

Mike,

I'll bet your doing good on the goose hunting this year. I've never field hunted. I'd like to take you up on that sometime. BTW how do you keep warm in a layout blind. I imagine the cold goes right through you laying on the ground.

Back right out of HS, myself and a friend built one of these. My friends dad owned a welding shop. We used a 110 Honda 3 wheeler as the drive. We used 2 Volkswagen 14" wheels as the drive wheels. We welded 1/4" bolts to the rims for the traction. In the center of the rims we put flat plates so in case we broke through we had a type of paddle. It worked awesome. We were able to go about 20 mph with it on a 1448 Monark flat. I wish I had pictures.

Dave, do you know the guy that owns this? That vid is of this rig.

Ed,
Nope ,just pulled the video off the internet. It has been ages since I've seen one on the river. These younger fellas don't know what they are missing. :>)

I like it. Sets the part of my mind working that probably should remain dormant.

reminds me of the time when we were kids.
took the tires of a ten speed bicycle and cut teeth.in the rear rim.
Next we set out on the ice of the Mississippi.
This was before helmets pads and parental supervision, but hey, nobody was seriously hurt.

Hahaha, I think that could be said for many of the old farts on this page, including me. Then again, what fun is that. Hope you are having fun this fall.

Ed, that is just plain ingenious. By the way, how early is all this ice I am looking at? Set any records this year?
Al

I will be ice fishing this weekend Al. Typically don't get out on the ice until after Christmas earliest or after the new year. That is how early the freeze up is around here.

Caught an early am flight to Chicago yesterday and they had to deice plane before take off. Never has this happened to me this early in the year.

At least we don't have 70000 feet of snow like they got in Buffalo.

Ed,

The layouts are actually pretty warm. There is some padding and you wear insulated bibs. When you get in the layout you are out of the wind and pretty warm inside the blind.
