Well actually got back two weeks ago but the combination of another hunt and no internet has pretty much kept me from posting pics.

Left home on August 26th and headed to Colorado for archery elk with two other traditional archers. Hunted an area I have taken several elk in the past but no shots taken on this trip. We did see 9 bulls and a couple dozen cows between us but no opportunities materialized.

On Sept. 9th we broke camp and the guys dropped me off in North Platte, Nebraska on their way back to Wisconsin. Within an hour or so my buddy from the UP showed up and we repacked my gear into his trailer and headed for New Mexico the following morning.

New Mexico was amazing, we nicknamed it the Jurassic park of elk hunting. In the first 3 days of the season I saw 44 elk and 15 were bulls. I took this 6x6 on the evening of the third day with my long bow - my first with traditional equipment.

My two buddies in New Mexico were handicapped by shooting compounds :) but we still all managed to take respectable 6x6's

Way to go Pete. I know of 3 others that were also in New Mexico during your time frame. No shots taken although they said they did seen plenty just not in bow range. Sounds like an awesome area.

Wow, any elk with a bow is great, but getting a nice bull with the long bow is amazing!

I am correct that not only did you do it with a longbow, but your elk was taken first? Working off the amount of hide left on the racks in the photo...

Nice Bull, Pete! You are a great hunter Jerimiah Johnson, so how are you at grilling elk steaks over charcoal? How about you bring some steaks to GB the last week in October and show us! Give us a call sometime . Take care you ole salty....JB

Actually RL, mine was the second bull taken. I just didn't want to be the last one haha. The bull in the middle is going to be a European mount so he was taking his time getting it cleaned up.

Thanks Joe, I'll be at GB for the second opener but I do have some time available that last week before heading to deer camp. I'll give you a call soon.

Thanks everyone. I switched back to traditional archery in 2009 after a 35 year absence (my compound years). I am having the time of my life. I had forgotten how much fun being an archer can be.

Boy do these pictures ever look familiar. I enjoyed seeing them on this site by the way, Pete. Once again, it was too bad you couldn't have swung west for another 90 to 100 miles to come and see us.

That was sweet how all three of you scored on bull elk. That is a feat not many do. Got a kick out of your partners being "handicapped" by having to use compound bows! Well said, young man. That had to be a fun trip back home.

By the way, how is the meat?
Al
