interested in knowing where your band came from?

If you've bagged a banded duck or goose and wondered where it was banded at, you can find out at http://flyways.us/surveys-and-monitoring/banding-and-marking-programs/bands-across-america ... or if you just want to get a sense of migration patterns for various species... the data goes back to 1914 all the way to this past spring and you can search by state or flyway.

Scaup I harvested in '04 was banded all the way up by Great Slave Lake in northern Canada in '98. Interesting stuff. chasdjca hunter Posts: 28Joined: Wed May 26, 2010 9:34 am

Chas. you couldn't say it better. It is interesting. When I lived in Anchorage, AK, the US Fish and Wildlife people in the office there, had a large map of North and South America. On it they used colored string to indicate an Alaskan banded bird and where it had been harvested. Of course the pintails were the most interesting to me because of where they were taken; From Alaska throughout Canada, the lower 48, Mexico, Central America, Caribbean Sea islands, and South America. It is good to have these great people (biologsts) working with our waterfowl. Now we know that some of our ducks frequent the northern islands of Japan. Exciting stuff for sure.

I have shot 2 banded birds I got one the last 2 seasons the 1st one was a drake mallard that was banded in millville,NJ and flew about 50 miles where I took it. Only had the band on about 7 months and was a young bird. This past Jan. I shot a lesser snow goose that was banded in Maryland in 2001. As I thought about it that snow goose has flown 1000's and 1000's of miles back and fourth to canada probably 10 or 11 times to the breading grounds. Then 10 years after being banded it ended up on the coast of NJ. Really put the birds life in perspective. Really neat that you can track them and their migration patterns.

Neat site. It will only show reported bands. If you dont report your band it wont be on there.

I have always reported my Bands. I want that information. Add to the lore of Duck Hunting.

Only band I have is from a drake lesser scaup I killed back on Mobile Bay back January 1998.
He had been banded in Nauvoo, IL, in March of 1988 as an adult. That would make him at least 11 years old when I got him.
The band was so worn they had to etch it & examine it under a microscope to read the remaining numbers.

I found a dead banded comorant in a marsh in SC, that was 5 years old and banded in Ontario Canada........Quite the trip

I was looking through Rob Robertson's list. That is incredible that he shot two mallards, a year apart, with successive band numbers.

I have a few band stories:

I shot successive mallard singles that were both banded, but the banding locations and years were different. And then I went three more years before shooting my next band.

I shot two snow geese from a flock on Hudson Bay that lacked one digit from being successive...like ending in 3 and 5. They had been banded at the same time and place three years earlier, so they had really stuck together.

A DU biologist from Canada was hunting with me at my place in Missouri. He shot a banded Canada goose that had been banded under his permit in Manitoba...so the certificate said banded by and taken by the same person!

My son shot a Canada goose with a very well-worn band. It had been banded 16 years earlier and was more than one year old when banded. I was sure it was the oldest ever, but our state Canada goose project leader told us they get band recoveries from twenty-year old Canadas every year.

I used to think I shot a banded bird for every one hundred harvested...but it seems like it's more than that now. It's an interesting subject.

Good Stuff there Jeff. I agree it is an interesting subject.

Here is the story on My Consecutive Banded Mallards.

I was hunting a small lake next to a peanut field near Davidson, Oklahoma.Single mallard comes in and I take it. Banded Alzada Montana. Almost one year later to the day I was invited by a Ducks Unlimited Chairman to hunt his Duck Club lake near Thackerville, Oklahoma. He said since I was his guest I got first shot. A single greenhead comes in and I take it. Banded. I get to work, call in the number and then enter the number in my hunting notes. I could not believe what I was seeing. I shot the very next number. Consecutive band numbers in Consecutive years at lakes 100 miles apart. I dont even want to try and figure the odds on that.

As you can see, I lost the paper work on the Pintail and a Widgeon. I also shot a banded drake Gadwall 2 years ago that I gave to the guy I was hunting with.

The 03-04 duck season was like a dream come true. A friend told me that I should have been purchasing lottery tickets then.
