Guys, I have just bought a Winchester Model 94 30-30 with iron sights. Havent shot iron sights in MANY years. Gun seems to shoot high (5-6 inches) at 25 yards. Rear sight is adjustable. Do I raise it or lower it? Seems like I would raise it but Im not sure. Thanks, Steve

Currently, you're sighting below the point of impact, which means that if you were to draw a line from your eye, through the two sights, your line of sight hits low.

If you lower the rear sight, it will lower your eye, causing your sight line to actually move upward to where the bullet is actually impacting.

Scott , Don't mean to disagree, but you want to move the rear sight in the direction you want the bullet to impact. So if the gun shoots high lower the rear sight.

5-6 inches is a huge amount at 25 yards.. If you can not get enough adjustment by lowering the rear sight you may have to replace the front sight with a higher one. Lets hope that is not the case.

Before you get too far into this, make sure you clean the gun real good... start from a known condition. Decide what ammo you want to shoot and buy a couple boxes of the same lot number. Then hit the bench....

Thanks for the input guys. Just messing around so far but I wanted to be sure of the correct procedure before getting serious at the bench. Gun is from 1974 but I dont think it had ever been shot. Bore was pristine and there is only a small mark on the stock. Thanks again for the input. Steve
 
Throw the open rear site away and screw an aperture site on her! Holding fine when your focused on a nice buck takes very cool nerves. simply looking through the aperture is so much easier. I shot my first buck with the 94 & open sites, spine'd it. If he had been farther away I would have shot over him. Same reason our military has used aperture sites for the last 100 years.

That's a Williams 5D site on the 94 now. Hit the gun shows, with the popularity of the 94 you should find a number of different makes and styles available for it as well as blanks to put in the barrel slot.
