Is it worth buying an alumacraft ducker with a few small holes??

Found what might be a real cheap alumacraft ducker, the only prob. is a few holes one the size of a nickel the other two are the size of a pencil. Is there any way other than JB weld to fix this??

Fairly easy fix with Alumiweld. I typically pick it up at various boat or model airplane shows. Where you located? Do a google search for a distributor in your area or buy on-line.

Or take it to a good aluminum weldor and have them fix it permanently...

That'd be my first choice. It shouldn't be too expensive I wouldn't think. If it's big enough you may have to come up with patch for it and then grind the welds down. You could do the grinding etc.

Don't use jb weld. It will work for a while but the product will weaken the adjacent alum and over time you will create new holes. Take it to someone who can weld it.

Size of a nickel?! No problem! I once had to patch a hole the size of a 12 ga pattern at 18" (accidental discharge, about 1 1/4" hole if you're wondering), drug out the TIG welder when I got home and patched it before too many saw it.

Are the holes due to the bottom wearing thin or from something punching them? If they've been poked in should be fairly easy to fix. If it's due to the hull getting thin from dragging/wear I'd think twice about buying it. Might be more to fixing than what it's worth. Stay away from JB weld or any other epoxy type patch, you want a SAFE, PERMANENT repair not a makeshift patch. The water up in SD can be plenty cold during duck season, not exactly when you want to find out the JB Weld just won't cut it.

If you can post some good close ups of the damage and an overall of the boat maybe we can help determine the best way to repair.

Hope this helps,

Jim S
