It must be duck season

The season here opened on the 8th. Today it was snowing with a strong north wind. Nothing that would stick around but it did make a sticky mess on my windshield. Sad to say but the BW teal will be heading south as I type this. It's a good thing I got out this weekend and found a few. Drake managed to get his first retrieves and did great. He will be one year old tomorrow.

And just because... here are a few pictures from the long weekend. Summer is making a hasty retreat.

Today it was snowing with a strong north wind.

If its any comfort, it was a light north wind and 76 degrees at 5:00am here this morning!
I didn't hunt the teal opener, might go next Sunday.

Carl, It is supposed to warm back up to the low 70s this week but with overnight lows in the low 40s. My fear is that the teal will be gone. Will have to work much harder to get the big ducks.

Happy Birthday, Drake! He is a good looking boy. Those pictures are beautiful, Paul. Thanks so much. So termination dust has begun showing up. I'll bet you are right about seeing the last of the bluewing/cinnamons. What will be interesting will be all the new birds that begin to show up from north of you. I hope the the two of you have a great season together.

Al, Drake was doing what he was bred to do. It was obvious that it is in his genes. I have a heavy travel schedule the next three weeks so I don't know how much hunting I will get in. Then we are off to Saskatchewan.

One of my favorite potholes near the border had loads of BWs a couple of weeks ago but I fear you may be correct, Paul. A darned chilly north wind blowing this AM.

I will let you know if any stuck around on the weekend. It was just plain cold this morning.

We're still 19 days (but who's counting) from our opener so I'm not holding my breath on the BWs. No doubt plenty of GWs behind 'em to keep me happy.

Paul, I began looking at last year's pictures and first found this one of Graham aka Drake when he was 4 weeks old.

That morning was our opener for early teal season. Like all duck openers I was bright eyed and bushy tailed at 3:00AM. I have been an early riser for eons when it comes to ducks.

There was no problem with that morning what so ever. Here is a picture of Chip and the ducks. It was a great opener.

I remember getting home, cleaning my ducks and was just thrilled to death with what Chip showed me. It was a great opener.

Little did I know about what was going to happen with Habi. Bev said, "Oh by the way, this could be a very long day. Habi has been panting a lot.

Well normally I turn into a pumpkin at 9PM. It was then that Bev told me that she was going to bed and so I decided to sit in the office with Habi who was already in the whelping box. At 9:45PM she had her first pup. Bev sure was right. It was a very long day but I sure had fun and would do that all over again. Drake is taking right after his dad.

Thanks for posting this memory Al. Hard to believe that the little ball of fur that arrived by air is now this 90 + lb giant. He's a big boy to be sure.

Send those teal south!!! QUICK!!! Our teal season opens Saturday!!!

Beautiful country
