It's not a huge one

but certainly my biggest to date. I went out fishing today and didn't catch a single fish I was hoping to catch. Oh well. I was however rewarded with a SNOOK! This one was too short to keep...he measured about 23 or 24" I believe and they have to be 27" to keep. DANG! But it sure was fun. A snook is one of the jumpingest kinda fish there is probably...what fun! For those of y'all that aren't familiar with snook, they are a warm water fish. We'll get em up here in Jax and they'll get a population going where they're actually breeding and then we'll get a cold winter and they'll die off. They do come back though.

If you were in Minnesota, I'd say it looks like a WalleyeNorthernShiner fish. But I guess it must be a snook . . .

Will you take me fishing this Christmas? Seriously. My Meg would love a day of warm weather fishing, if I pry her away from Disney for a few hours.

Very nice! For some reason, snook have been the hardest doggone inshore fish for me to hook up with over the years. I chased them around middle FL in my younger years ( on many occasions) with an uncle and some cousins, and caught everything but. I've had some caught right next to me in the boat, and I love catching reds, specs, etc...but I haven't gotten down to FL to try to break that run of luck on snook...so (in my mind), that's a prize, all day long. Good catch!

My dad and I used to fish for snook off the Green Bridge between Bradenton and Palmetto...fun to catch and fun to remember it.

They DO look a lot like walleye...maybe one of these days you'll come up and fish Saginaw Bay...lots of walleye...in fact, its almost strange to NOT limit in the early summer.

I love those darn things and they rate in my top 5 on the dinner plate. I think they are some kind of delicious. What kind of tackle were you using? Fly?

Mike,
Just a quick thought. When you know when you're going to Disney......let me know. One of my best friends (since hs) works for Disney....has been a personal assistant to Mickey also. I'll put you in touch with him and............well, it'll be worth the contact. ;)
Lou
p.s. I'm in touch with him every week. We're both working on the reunion committee (& website) for our 45th HS reunion coming up the Summer of 2010.

Dani,
Very cool. I've always wanted to fly fish for them. Were you spinning or fly fishin'?
Around here, we do get those "Michigan Bonefish" you hear about. Fight well and their definitely a warm water species...........yup, CARP. My biggest, though with a bow and arrow, was 36" at 32#. Great fight.

Mike-

When will y'all be here in FL? It's a good possibility that I could take y'all fishing depending on the dates...

I was spincasting with a very shallow crankbait. I had another one pop on me when the hook got hung up on the line and all it would do is float on the top, so I would pop it back to the boat and had a little snook pop on it but didn't totally commit...

I have a flyfishing rod but not for salt water.

Lemme tell ya, those snookies are HELL on a leader. But they sure are an acrobatic fish...

Dani,

That's a great catch for that far north!

If you handle them (like you are in the picture) be careful of their gill covers. Each side has a protrusion that is razor sharp.
