I've started the journey...Oil Painting

I've started painting my first few decoys in oil paint. It has been a bit of an adjustment, but I am already enjoying the workability of the paint. The blending is a dream. My fine lines on the other hand are making me take my skill to the next level. It iis definitely invigorating. I can't find enough time to paint!

This hen Bufflehead is decoy I owe Yuon Mike. I am using the Grisaille technique suggested by Keith Mueller. The base coat of oils over the Ronans is still wet in this photo.

Man, only half way done and they look great! Just wait a few years for the patina to set in. Those deke will look awesome!

They look great Geoff! With your painting skills I'm sure that you will settle right in to the oils...........................Kevin

Great start. You are getting a nice soft look. Can't wait to see them finished.

Best of luck on your oil paint journey Geoff. Im sure you will make them work for you. I cant help thinking your style in Acrylics is just plain outstanding however. Kinda like Rick Brown. I cant imagine his birds in oil.

Thanks for the encouraging comments guys.

Charlie D - It was tough letting go what I was comfortable with. I think oils will take my painting to the next level though. That's the hope. I'll post up when these are finished and you can let me know if I'm getting the hang of it...

Geoff,

Glad you decided to switch, your old style of painting was getting a tad old, worn out and frankly was loosing that nice crisp edge and the blending was a tad smeary.

This new method should help you out of that funk.

I know it was tough on all of us watching you post those old ones.

Looking forward to your new ones this year!

LOL,

Any of those floating at Westlake this year?

note to myself: Add Geoff Vine to the list of people whose decoys I would love to add to my collection someday

Scott,
Your just getting around to adding him now. Its been on my list for a while now.

Geoff,
When I first saw your decoys I assumed they were in oil. I remember talking to another carver and he told me that you used acrylics with lots of extender and blending. I really enjoy your work and I think stepping to oils will only do more for it.
I worked with oils one time when starting a new project. I loved the way you could work them blend and mix but they were artistic oils I bought locally and I painted them over a sealer of spar varnish. After sitting for two weeks and still not drying I finally wiped it off and painted in acrylic.

Any tips?

Just for the record........I think Geoff would do a fantastic job painting with any media he chooses. He is a true artist with a flare for unique style.

Really nice job Geoff.

Willy
