Jode Hillman - turkeys?

It's that time of year here in our part of the country and I guess that means yall are still a couple of weeks away? You scouting out a particular gobbler(s) to use some new decoys on (did you post completed pics of the works-in-progress you posted a month or so ago)?

In the duckboats.net world, I always look forward to seeing your turkey hunt pics and stories of big eastern gobblers... and harassing Sutton via private messages and emails about his Rios and Merriams out West... and of Dani's stories of chasin quiet gobbler's in snake country. :)

Kyle, our colder than normal winter has our birds a little delayed, but they are starting to show up in their normal spring haunts. No gobbling yet though. I have scouted a few nice toms the last few week, but really need to work through the two years old to find them. I finished a nice batch of turkey calls a few days ago, and have more to do this week. I will add some pics once I get back to my PC........turkey decoys are working in progress and I will try to snap some pics as the be nearer completion.

My main goal is to get my daughter another chance to redeem herself of her miss of last year, she has been practicing so hopeful
Y she can connect if given the opportunity this season. I am excited and really looking forward to the season!

Kyle, Here's a Mahogany over redwood box........very mellow and sweet sounding.

And a Purpleheart over Sassafras, about a loud and raspy as they get.

wow, beautiful calls! I actually forgot you made them as well. Do any slate/pot calls? I've been meaning to try my hand at it for years but just keep procrastinating.

I had hoped to let my wife redeem herself as well from last year's miss but we haven't been able to work it into the schedule. I'd like to know how you are able to pick through the 2yr olds before you shoot... cameras and patterning? Do you have a scope of some kind on your gun to check spur length prior to squeezing the trigger? I can't see well enough to tell spur size until they are flopping but honestly I'm not picky so it would probably just make me nervous b4 the shot. Good luck when you finally get rolling and be sure to post up a story or two if something happens!

Hahaha, the only way to pick through the two years olds is luck! It's pretty much impossible to tell by looking at the bird, often I go off behavior. If they come charging in at the first set of yelps, then it's probably a jake or two year old.

I try and scout as much as I can before and during the season. If I see a big gobbler in a field I'll watch him and see how he acts. The older birds get lazy and make the hen do all the work coming to them.

Thanks, I enjoy making the boxes. Probaly do a few more befor the season starts. I have not made any pot calls. Just never had the inclination to try.

I got 3 of the 4 permits I wanted, and my daughter got her youth tag. That should give us a little over a month of opportunity.
