Joe Bucher Duck Call

Follow up question: Can a call be converted to metal reed?
RM
Conceivably, but it would take some work. Whereas a j-frame, Arkansas style call has a sloped/curved toneboard and a flat mylar/plastic reed, a (traditional) metal reed call has a flat toneboard and a curved metal reed.

As I recall, Joe's calls are marketed under the name "Heritage Game Calls" or something like that - known for his carved and painted calls.

Needless to say, alcohol was a factor in its purchase. Down the road I would like to convert it to something that sounds like a duck. I'm not that much interested in mantle pieces.

id be careful converting this one.... ive seen lots of his calls, never seen this paint scheme. Yours is the first. Lots of times they were numbered with the design he did. By chance, is this one numbered?

I think alcohol was your best friend when acquiring this call. Very very neat piece you have.

Yes, it is numbered; 121/250. After further reading I discovered that a call can sound flat if the cork gets old. This one was made in 2002.

RM - you might try flipping the reed over. As I recall from my old days making this style, mylar reeds flex differently depending which side is up. And if you need any cork, message me your address and I'll send you a few pieces - I just found a bag full when pulling some old stuff to photo. Would probably need to be trimmed (xacto/razor blade is best).

My mind is still smoldering in awe from your latest posts on the material's thread, but Step 1 in J-frame "repair" is check the reed's spine and insure it smiles, rather than frowns on its toneboard. And step 2 is replace the cork. So you've not lost your mylar touch, either.
