Jon Boat Question

I'm looking for a light weight 14-ft MV-jon boat, preferably the 48 width and not 36. I'm having trouble finding just a cheap, light basic boat. I currently have a small fleet -- deep v, momarsh, carsten, MLB sneak....all work, but I think I'd like to go back to a jon. I hunted a lot out of the momarsh this year and I just can't shoot from the layout position. I had opportunities where I would have been better off swinging my gun at the birds rather than shooting. Also, as the season progresses I need a boat that I can put a heater in so that I can hunt my cocker later in the year. The place I hunt is a private marsh that has no launch, hence the need for something light.

Looking to get the boat and work on a blind setup over the winter. My problem is that all the dealers seem to carry the big, heavy duty boats.

Any thoughts?

Look at a Lowe 1440M (or the 1448M).

I hunted out of a 1440M for years. Its a riveted hull, 205# hull weight. Mine ran good with a 9.9, great with an 18hp.
Was a great 1 person boat, OK for 2 people. I got great service out of it.
When I started hunting bigger water more regularly I sold it and got my 14' semi-v.

Like you noted, they don't tend to keep the less expensive boats in stock, you will most likely have to order it. To avoid getting killed on freight, tell them to wait until they have a load of boat coming.

If I ever have to replace my 14 semi-v, I would get a Lowe 1467WT or 1667WT.
 
Joe how big is the marsh? Do you really need a MV? You gain a little more room at the same weight by going with a regular Jon boat. If the place can get good waves on it then the MV is nice but in protected areas the flat nose is no problem.

Carl, thanks for that, I'll look into it with the dealers here. Tim, the one I hunt is small, but there is big water across the road that stays open later and would like to be able to use it there when needed. It is a bit of a run to the end with the cattails.
 
My first boat was a little Jon, the biggest gripe I had was the square bow it had. It took a ton of work to get it to push into reeds, or cat-tails. If you get one, make sure its got one of those pointy bows on it. I got rid of it because of the bow.-Seth

I paddled a hand me down from my grandfather Lowe 12 footer through sloughs all summer fishing. I did use a small 6 hp motor on it during high school with a home made sissor lift blind draped with 12 oz duck canvas. If you want a 14 footer I believe the Lowe brand would be the way to go., I am sure you could throw a small 10 horse mud motor on it and would never have to worry. The 12 footer took a beating.
