Juniper Wood?

I just discovered an add on Craigslist, from a fellow in my area, offering boat grade juniper milled to your specifications. I'm interested in getting some nice boards to carve decoys out of. I'm not exactly sure what Juniper is. I think it's actually cedar, and I also believe that in my area Juniper is used as a broad term to describe a variety of cedar that is decent boat building material. I live in NC. Anyway, I don't really know what I'm getting into here with this wood. I'm probably going to get this fellow to mill me a few boards. Why not?

I was hoping some of you guys would let me know what you think. Do any of you have more in depth knowledge of this wood? Have I stumbled across a treasure trove of good carving stock close to home? Or is this stuff best left to boat building. Please tell me what you think.

Thank you all,

John D.

A traditional boat building and decoy making wood. In boat building is used moastly to plank, but can be used laminated for framing. Drinks glue and finishes. Carves pretty easily and has good permanence, meaning has good rot resistance. DO ask how dry the wood is that you get. If air dried It may take awhile if the tree was downed in Spring or Summer. Definitely ask. I pay about $3-4 for a blank sized portion. 4.5 thick x 8 wide and 16" long... basically a decent sized black or mallard. That's about four board feet. Just a thought to help you decide if its a good deal. I'd pay twice that if it was clear or if I wasn't carving a lot. But economy is part of my program... Good Luck
