Just a teaser

But I'm just too excited to not share. Steve and I spent the last weekend and today chasing turkeys in some swamps that I know and love. I'll share more later but let's just say that there were toms that came close to being in range, but never quite got all the way to us. There were others that were well within range but because it's the swamp, there were inevitably things in the way of us being able to shoot. We finally made something happen this morning and luckily did not leave the woods empty handed. Though, even if we had, we had an outstanding weekend with at least 6 different toms that worked us over.

This bad boy came home sporting 1 3/8" spurs and a 9 1/2" beard. No clue on the weight. I'd guess around 15lbs, which is pretty typical for an osceola in my experience.

More to come later.....but YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYY Turkey #1 is in the bag

woo hoo! awesome Dani! I gotta get down there and get an osceola at some point in the near-ish future... look forward to hearing the story. I just posted a vague report with cpl pictures and completely missed this one of yours. One thing I've done differently this year is buy into the hype of carrying a 20ga compact and shooting TSS, I'm loving the small compact gun compared with my 835 and makes hill climbing with a 22lb gobbler on your back much more manageable.

Thought about you this weekend while we were working birds Kyle.....were back in an area that we had always done well in but had left to spend a couple of years looking at new areas over in the Panhandle.....we did well there but those are Easterns and we wanted to get back to Osceolas....came back to our old areas only to find them taken over by new hunters in the area and are now searching out new areas....a new trailer and a decent RV park finally gives us the ability to really properly hunt this area......we'll get our new area figured out this season and be ready for you come next season I think.....Dani needs to hunt your bills and big Easterns...it will be a great trade....

Thanks y'all.

Kyle, I shoot my duck/upland gun for turkeying. I held Steve's gun for him while he was messing around with something or another and I thought to myself....YUP I am glad that I carry my "little" 20 ga around cuz his is a beast to haul around. It's been a while since I've shot a bird as big as 22lbs. I do know that Steve was either putting rocks in my pack as we walked or that turkey was gaining weight in death because I would've sworn that after the 45 minute walk back to the truck my turkey had grown to be the biggest turkey ever. Interestingly enough though, when it came time to hang him in camp while we messed around with moving gear around, he shed those pounds miraculously and was back to being his svelte 15 lb or so self. Funny how that works.

All you Nanci's Girls and Sissy Boys that think a couple of lbs of gun makes a difference make me smile.....geez Dani the case of ammo you carry weighs more than my gun does.....and besides how does one get BIG muscles?...they work out with BIG WEIGHTS.....you think Ahnuld got to be as bulked up as he was lifting nerf balls?.....

Children....next thing you know you'll be skeletonizing your TermoCells and shaving your socks to save a couple more ounces.....

HERE KITTY KITTY KITTY's.....

Dani,

Yes you are correct, dead turkeys do indeed put on weight on the way back to the truck. FWIW,,,,,,,, In that respect, turkeys can't hold a candle to the weight gain demonstrated by the fish that got away. ;>) ;>)

Hey now.....I like to make compromises somewhere. I gotta bring enough shells to ensure I can get me a turkey, OOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRR if you run out of shells, I am sure to have enough extra for the both of us to use my gun. I gotta bring firewood to keep warm and keep the skeeters at bay. I gotta bring plenty of food and drink to keep me from starving to death while we're out. I don't gotta carry around a heavy gun.

ha! I'm very slow to adopt change, hence the number of miles and dead critters on my 22yr-old MB 835 Ulti-Mag... but I have a nasty, nasty pattern at 40yds with this new 20ga and enough friends using the same combo with +50yd kills that tells me I'm still in business at the range of my 835. With that said, I've still carried ol Suzie a cpl 2 times this year and will do so out of habit if nothing else!

Steve - Relative to hunt trade, that's sounding like a great plan. We have a lot of WMA that I'm still exploring and managed success at end of last year on one I hadn't hunted in years. Lot of options here if someone puts on their walking boots.

Thanks y'all.

I've been shooting a lightweight 20 with Fed. Heavy weight 7s. Great pattern and 30 and still killer at 40+. Last year public land bird was 42 yards when I dropped him. ( old bird made me and was getting ready to bolt!)

Nice going Dani! You guys are starting off right. Now if Steve could of held up his side of the deal for the double . ;-)
