Just found a new product out there....or rather, it found me. One of the fellas who manufactures these is a sculler and we've done business with him before. At this moment....... :) ...........we are not a dealer for these.
The is a TungBar. It locks around the trailer tongue and holds the trailer up at an angle for drainage, cleaning or storage. It's very simple and can be locked with the welded ring for the lock. I got two of them the other day and I already think I'm going to need more. They are manufactured out in Idaho and the guys are enjoyable to work with.
Take a look: www.tungbar.com
Later guys,
Lou

Very cool.

I have my Brant II trailer tongue resting on an archery target and I didn't notice that it had fallen before a big storm in Feb this year. The boat filled with water, that turned to ice over night, and ended up stopping me from sculling one day.

You can't imagine how heavy that boat was!

Dave,
Ouch. Actually, I do know how heavy they are when full of water. ;) Not fun either.
Now, you have a solution beyond an archery target. That's the type of thing I've done several times.

Can it fix cracked concrete?

I would have just brushed the snow off those bunks instead of trying to prop it up to let them drain!

Ya know Lou...this looks like one of those incredibly simple products that someone should become a dealer for...especially in Michigan.

Did they offer that opportunity?

Yup, I've received the paperwork/contract and we'll be in discussions later today. Very cool product. It's so simple that........why didn't I think of that. ;)
Great seeing you the other day. Always fun.

Ya know, that just seems too obvious. Why didn't I think of that. ;) Sometimes the simplest solution is the best...doh.

Lou... Does this thing have a security application?

e.g. could you clasp a piece of chain around the tongue and lock it, to secure not only the bar but the trailer as well? The pic on his Web site shows it locked to the trailer on a length of chain... that's not much good b/c while it keeps someone from picking up the bar and walking away with it, they can still lower the trailer onto a hitch and drag the whole mess away. But if you could secure the bar to the trailer so that it can't be moved from the "down" position... it'd be a good visual and physical deterrent to theft.

You've played with one in person... I'm just trying to think it thru in my head... whattya think?

I use several different locks to make sure I KEEP the trailers I own. ;)
I use one of the key lockers that go through the hitch and lock the ball holder into the hitch. This prevents folks from stealing my trailer insert. I've talked with folks who have locked their trailer to the hitch but the thieves merely pulled the insert pin (not lockable type) and pulled the insert/ball, still attached to the trailer, put it into the receiver of their truck and drove away safe & secure. ;)

The yellow locker below has a ball that goes up into the coupler and locks around the entire coupler so it can't be removed....prevents stored trailers from being stolen. If you are hauling your trailer and have a flat tire......carry one of these to lock your trailer up alongside the road while you go get a tire that you forgot to bring along as a spare. Doh!

This brown coupler lock slips over the coupler and screws up into the area for the ball and then locks up so it can't be stolen.

Couple more ideas to follow.

When traveling, I use these easy clips to hold the locking mechanism in place.

When parking a trailer, I use one of these "through locks".

This through-lock prevents the trailer from being lifted off the ball and the hitch/insert lock prevents the whole unit from being stolen. If I must leave trailer and boats, I have shielded cables I will use to lock the boats to the trailer.

Lou,

With a couple cans of WD-40 and a BIG wrench they might be able to the trailer and ball in pic nuber 1. Have not personally seen it, but been told it does happen.

Lou, Since I park my trailer on grass or dirt I would think a pad on the bottom to keep it from sinking in would help. Or just like I did in my motorcycle days, carry one more piece of something to put under the stand. Maybe even a crushed beer can? It does look like a simple elegant idea though. Some one just wrecked their back one too many times.

That is a remote possibility since you typically can't keep the ball from rotating when putting a monkey wrench on the nut. Sometimes I've even welded the nut to the ball stud........that prevents theft unless they are carrying a torch. ;)

Matt,
The tung bar is good at what it does........hold the trailer up for cleaning and drainage. I'm very happy with it. There is that ring for securing the tung bar from theft and that's about it. The other pictures of the locks I use are for preventing theft of the trailer itself.

This reminds me of the time we were changing a ball on a guy's truck, and nobody had a pipe wrench to grip the base of the ball with. The nut was broke loose, but too rusted to turn off without gripping the ball. I saw a piece of bailing twine, doubled it, wrapped it several turns on the shaft below the ball, and tied it to the bumper. Once we figured out which way to wrap it, so the twine tightened instead of unravelling, it worked like a charm. My friends thought I was some kind of genius, even a blind pig finds an acorn now and then.
