Kalash Layout shakedown..wet but not bloodied 1/7/12

Hopefully not too much weight yet.... about a gallon of epoxy, and maybe 9 yards of 6oz cloth.... Will weight it again when we are done. Started at 140lbs.

High temps (99 today) and high humidity, so the epoxy is still tacky, could not sand. Rufus spoke with John Kalash about the refurb we were doing, specifically wanted to ask about removing the unsupported deck plywood around the cockpit. John agreed it was an appropriate modification. So I put the trim router bit with bearing to work, and cut the plywood back. We will install a coaming inside the frames that will extend 1.5" above the deck to accept the snaps that we will use to install the canvas sprayskirt.

Some pictures for those who asked about the framing too.

Dave,
that is just a really cool build and a restoration. I am very impressed with the original shape and the build details. Just what you need and not any more. A tribute to the builder and you two for sweating out the restoration.

Will be something to see it hunting this season.

A litle more done.....

Installed a coaming to finish the edge, strengthen the cockpit so we can put a weight on it getting up and down.

Sanded everything for the glass work....

Glassed it today... pictures to follow.

Josh, you better get busy! Taking longer than I thought... too much waiting/curing time in this hot humit weather we have here in VA!

Dave

Dave,
job looks well on the way. Hot in the tent still, I bet.
Should all be worth it in the heat of the late season!

That is just one cool layout. I see more and more why they are the Cadillac of the fleet.

You guys better practice the shooting from the sitting position. It is a whole nother ball game......

I learned that in my KARA.

Still plenty hot! Just got in from the last coat of epoxy for the evening.... was at a Delta BBQ tonight.... Let it cure for several days before I start sanding. Next part of the project is the spray canvas mounting coaming....

Dave

Dave, I really like your posts and this one in particular as the boat is from a Michigan boat builder, very cool. The more pics and info you post the better.

Mark

The original spray shield was glued and stapled with a whole lot of staples..... that worked fine when the plywood was simply painted. Since we epoxied and glassed the deck, I installed a coaming on the deck that will recieve the snaps that will secure the shield this time.

Slow progress with other priorities.... but we got the tow eyes installed.

Along with some rub strakes where we think the line will wrap around when we lift the bow to tow her.

Installed a pr of side runners that are intended to protect the edge some but also give us a finger hold to lift from. Did not want to put handles on the deck side, as I am thinking they would never be in the right spot anyway....

I installed a skeg to help it track when we tow,

Obviously got some FME on the hull side too. 2 coats today, another tomorrow and then let it cure until Thursday when we will flip it and get busy finishing up the cockpit and decks...

Pat, are you asking about towing, or have some experience to share? I have no experience, have not towed, or hunted this boat yet... the changes I am making are just an engineering guess.... the tow points, pad eyes are screwed into the frame members, and through bolted with large backing plates. The bolts under tension, the screws under compression. The rub strakes were positioned by running a line from each pad eye to a common point, and lifting the bow...just a best guess. I added the skeg thinking it will help it track better when towed, and maybe ride better when at anchor too? I know we will need to keep the bow out of the water for sure, or it will submarine! I think I will talk Rufus into some foam fore and aft too.... it currently has no floatation, which might have been OK when it was plywood, but we have added some weight when we glassed everything and added the extras so far....

We will hopefully will not have to tow it.... but in case, I wanted to do what we can. If we tow it, it will be because we don't have the tender...then I am doubtful a BBSB or SouthBay will be able to get the bow up enough to tow it without building some extra framework on the boats... not interested in making a mess of my BBSB that is for sure!

Anyone have some experience.... please share.

Dave
