Kara Hummer Questions

Does anyone know how a kara hummer will handle in snotty conditions? Is this boat for just small waters or can it handle larger bodies of water? Can it be made to handle an outboard motor? Thanks for any help. Paul

Small water, Very little wave action, light and small outboard or trolling motor will work just fine w/ some mods.

The Kara Hummer is a great platform for hunting shallow marshes and flooded corn. Most people use a pole to move around, but I've seen long tails that work pretty well. The boats don't track well in wind due to their hull shape and it's easy to fall out when standing.

I would stay off big water unless it's calm and you have a tender nearby.

Paul,

I built one 5-6 years ago as a second project (pirogue was the first). Do not go out in chop! I put a Tanaka/gamefisher 1.2 hp air cooled outboard on it. I could go along pretty good. I would put 2 dozen floaters in the front and the Rocky between my legs (110 pound Lab). With the weight distibuted that way we putted along quite nicely. However, I put my wife in the front one day putting along the Winooski river and it was putting along nicely until I decided to lean forward for a second. The submarine race was underway. I jumped back, and no harm was done.
I have also used it as a layout in open water. That was scary! Watching the waves roll up the bow and wondering why the plans didn't call for a 1x10 rather than a 1x6 to go around the cockpit. I told the guy I sold it to to make a curtain with a sleeved pvc frame to bring up 6-8 inches when he got set up. Probably more info than you wanted.

Here is a modified Kara that I built last year. It has a 5hp motor on it. I just recently ordered plans for a Bateau2 Duck Boat 15'.
