Kara Hummer

I just found a kara hummer for sale in my area for a reasonable price that has been used once in the last 5 years. I haven't seen it yet but it doesn't have a motor mount on it, it's the 14' double ender I believe. My question is, could I cut 2' of the end and add a transom and motor mount to make it a 12' boat? All I have is a Johnson 6hp 2stroke and would like to use it if I could. Any input is greatly appreciated!

shortened up by a couple of feet as a result of squaring off the rear end, sometime for the inclusion of a motor mount......

If its "really" the "Hummer" then its already got a sqare stern and depending on how and why they shortened it you might be able to add a transom.....

Sure screws the boat up for poling.....

Steve, I've been told you actually built most of this boat. It belonged to Mike Faught and I am thinking about buying it from his buddy, going to look at it tommorrow. It hasn't been shortened, I was just wondering if it was a possibility. I was thinking about building my own boat but this would be cheaper for now. I just want to be able to use my 6hp.

just a KARA....the "hummer" is a variation that Mark Schupp, also on this site came up with.....Iif I remember correctly so it would fit better in a pickup....

You could definately cut the stern off to whatever rib that you wanted to whcih would give you a squared stern once you finsined it off.....I'd say you're definately overpowered with a 6hp but it wouldn't be the first time a boat had a motor on it that was a tad too big for it.....

Be a quick modification too....

Steve

You're talking about the "Robber". That is the shorty Hummer. Do you need to go to the specs page and refresh your knowledge? Or are you sampling some Mead getting ready to head into spring equinox or something?

no mead Ray.....just stooooppppidddddd.....

BUt then everyone already knew that....thanks though for pointing it our......

Go shoot some Ptarmigan why doncha?

Steve

I did two like that. If I could figure out the attacment deal I'd post upp a pic. It didn;t work well with a 5hp works fine with an electric trolling motor.

Derek,
Too bad you didnt look at the boat already. Dan still has the boat. But until a couple days ago he had a 1.2hp Tanaka to sell too. He sold it cheap. Air cooled and Weighs 12# I think. Perfect for a boat like that.

His plan was for a temporary transom. A 2x6 C-clamped to the back of the cockpit box would be plenty strong, require no modification of the boat, and inexpensive as it gets.No fiberglass to repair.

It paddles really easy, unless you are going a long way.

Thanks Mike,
I wasn't really interested in the motor too much. Most of the places I hunt require at least a short boat ride and my 6hp is kinda the minimum motor I am willing to run. I was just wondering if it'd even be worth buying if I couldn't run my motor on it safely.

Derek,
I built a standard Kara and have used it some. It is NOT a boat to put a 6 hp motor on. The bottom is basically flat with no "V" or rocker. You will spear any wave over 6". The KARA was designed for flooded corn fields and for that purpose it works great. It poles pretty good but doesn't track well for paddling. It is an extremely stable platform for polling and I have even shot ducks standing up but it definately does not handle waves of any kind - well. If you use it in flat water you will be fine. If a 6 hp motor is your minimum, look for a different boat.

Derek,
My step dad may have a boat that is more up your alley.I am sure it would run well with a 6 hp. It is a home built also. Fiberglass over wood.Little wider and deeper than a Kara, and has a transom already. Not sure if he wants to sell it, but know he was thinking about it.Cant remember the name of the plans it was built from.Looks like a Devlin Broadbill though.Give me a call in a couple days if you are interested.I wont hear from him for at least another day or two.

Derek,
Tried to send you a PM, but for some reason it is not working. If you want to look at his boat, His name is also Dan. 325-0794. Boat looks like a Broadbill. And the price is pretty darn good. Probably about what it would cost to build it. And looking at it, I bet you could use your 6hp and carry a dog.

Thanks Mike,
I'll have to give him a call so I can check it out. I have a 1 yr. old fem. black lab and only own about 4 dozen decoys and all I've got is that 6hp so it sounds like it would be closer to what I'm looking for.
