Last day of scaup banding...

2,000 is a pretty good haul! What was the hen to drake ratio this year?

Hopefully next year there will be a better ratio.

Do you only help out on scaup banding or do you also help other birds? Or are "others" incidental to the scaup banding? I know when we helped out with mottled duck and wood duck banding, we would catch black bellies as incidentals and band them as well.

John,

We were banding down at TM Goodwin. I know they are banded in SC and GA as well. One of the FL banded blackbellies was killed during duck season in SC a few years back. I THINK they may be banding blackbellies here in Tallahassee but I'm not sure on that one. We have a good population up here before season and they do nest up here in the spring and summer.

Although I'm retired from Minnesota DNR - Wildlife, I still run the airboat for nightlighting operations in late summer capturing and banding ducks. We take ducks as they come, but goldeneyes are a pretty infrequent addition to the bag. They are also a pain to capture, in that they actively avoid the light. I know that the banding crew does band some goldeneye broods in the Bemidji area by drive trapping before they come up to work in this part of the state. I have checked hunters with banded goldeneyes before at Thief Lake.

I just got to thinking about it, the banded drake bluebill I killed on Mobile Bay back in January 1998 was banded in Nauvoo, Illinois. in 1988.

Is that by chance where y'all are doing the banding??
