Last day of the Champlain Season

Now that I have figured out how to re-size pictures and post them in the post, the season is over. However, here are a couple of pictures of our last day on Champlain. I don't remember another last day hunt that required me to take off my my jackets and hat so as not to sweat through all my clothes. It was sunny and 46. If any of the Champlain guys want to show off, they can identify the point where we were hunting just from the picture. Also pictured on the boat are 1 hen and 3 Drakes (2mature and 1 big juvenile). The decoys are two of John Bourbon's Lake Champlain style Goldeneyes. We had opportunities and more importantly we had another fun safe season.
People who don't duck hunt often ask me "why would you get up so early to go out and shoot birds?"
My standard response is "We build a fort, on a boat. Then we get together in the fort with our friends and bring our dog, snacks and shoot guns. What don't you understand?" Usually I see the smirk on the guys face and the slow head nod. A few minutes later "I wouldn't mind trying that sometime".
Merry Christmas to all and a happy and healthy new year.

Cheech,
that is one fine pair of decoys. Looks like a great day.

"We build a fort, on a boat. Then we get together in the fort with our friends and bring our dog, snacks and shoot guns. What don't you understand?"

I like that line.

Very nice Cheech, I will second removing layers for the last day, who would have thunk we would be doing that on December 22nd in VT.

Unbelievable that you were that warm up next to the Canadian border and down here next to Mexico I'm freezing! Congrats on a successful hunt and season.

Is that Crab Island in the distance? If not, I give up. I haven't hunted the VT side.
I started work yesterday but I hunted the day before and did good.
I had a bunch of new fleece and polypro I never even wore this year. No complaints.

Looks like you did alright. Again sorry I didn't get back to you in time. I managed to get out Tuesday and we got one big drake whistler to bomb the decoys and all three of us got a hit on him. Needless to say he wasn't picture worthy when the dog brought it back.

As long as I get one hunt where I work in some big ducks with my calls and kill one whistler I consider that a good season. Now on to planning the Islands Chapter DU dinner and carving some birds.

Cheech, thanks very much for posting the pics. It was an interesting day. We started out in the boat and spent the second half of the hunt sitting in the weeds eating beef stew and home made choc chip cookies.

Thanks guys for the kind words about my decoys. As I recall, I think we put out 34 whistler decoys and all but 6 were made by me. Its pretty neat to see your handiwork out in front of you doing what its supposed to do.

I hope you guys south of us have some more season left. Be safe and please post pics....

John

Cheech,

Gotta agree, the last day was pretty warm. We shot a couple whistlers. Didn't shoot at a bunch more. Shooters looking left, birds from the right. All day it seemed to go like that. We wern't quite right for the wind, but had a fun last day shoot anyway.
