Last day on Champlain 2012

Today was a short "old school" hunt. I dropped the kids off at 8 and everyone wanted to stop and talk and all I wanted to do was get out the door and to the lake. I may have broken a few speed limits on the way because I had to pick up the boys at 2 today. I had 11 goldeneye decoys from John Bourbon, Eddie Gayne, Julie Gilbert and a couple other people. Plus buffies from Brian Moyse. Somehow I managed to paddle out and be set up at 9:30. The Whistlers were everwhere, but I have never seen them so shy. They did not want in and I figured that the aquapod was just not hiding well in the open water. Then I found out why they were so shy. I have not heard that much shooting in a long time. It sounded like opening day. But I settled in low and had visions of feet down drakes at 30 yards. Those visions never materialized. I was hunting the backup gun today because "somehow" the bolt handle on the SX2 sheered off yesterday. The first group that came within range continues south and was met by the second group that was within range shortly thereafter. There was a third group. I emptied the gun as the two Whistlers banked at the edge of range and gained altitude. I thought I was true, but off he went...about 400 yards, and from the sky he fell. Imagine my surprise when I paddled all the way there and he was stone dead. By the time I got back to the decoys it was time to pack up and head out, but I sat for a minute to just soak it in. I thanked Chaplain aloud for everything it gave me this year. The memories that I will have forever. It was the perfect ending to the season that gave birds frequently, but never a limit. Merry Christmas all!

Very nice. My whistlers wouldn't decoy yesterday, and we saw hardly any black ducks where we'd seen a raft of 500+ on Monday. It was still a very nice afternoon--with seals, eagles and the whole river to ourselves.

And I still have 3 weeks of coastal hunting to go.

Nice Cheech- I miss hunting there.

Jeff- we are doing a mud hunt tomorrow ( outgoing to the ebb) Tried to get Hunter to go, but the little feller is sick. Planning on hunting down the bay on Monday and Tuesday- have to scout on Sunday which will also involve a spinning rod and sabiki rig in search of pollock.

Sounds like my kinda scouting!

I think there were 10 times as many fishing boats at the ramps than hunters this morning along the Mobile Bay Causeway.

John, I'm taking Tim and our duck protegee--who is finally out of "youth day" status due to a recent birthday--down to the midcoast tomorrow in the morning. I think I'm fully committed to Santa activities on Monday and Tuesday, but planning to hit some Cumberland County salt marsh on Wednesday. Both spots potentially involve sea-run browns, which are more fun than pollock but don't eat as well.

Let's start planning now for next year. Would you take a group of us Maine fishy types out for a Champlain trip and show us your old stomping grounds?

John and Jeff,
If you guys do plan a Champlain hunt next year, keep me posted and we will make an event of it. I am heading to to Maine on the weekend of the 18th to do battle with the Eiders again this year. I have been working on converting some old herters super mag mallards to Eiders. Just sitting here thinking of it I feel like a little kid on Christmas. The
hens are still wet with the base coat.

Eddie,
I will get you a pic of your Whistlers if you cant remember 06:)

Al,
Thanks.

Those decoys are looking good. I may get out once for eiders before the end of the season. We had a nice day on the whistlers this morning--see separate post.

And thanks for the "invite". I was born in Burlington, but don't think I've seen Champlain since about 1986. Looking at post from you VT guys, it's a quite a bit different from what we have for ducking here.

Jeff and John Kirk....I second Cheech's offer to host some sort of hunt/get together. A Vt DB gathering sounds like a great idea.

Jeff, my wife works with a Paul Reardon at IBM. Are you any relation?

John Bourbon

It's a plan. John Kirk and I haven't even hunted Maine together, so hopefully he'll chime in. If not, I'm sure I can round up some of the usual suspects. We can have a maple syrup tasting contest, compare local craft brews, and put together a cheddar and lobster feed.
