Last Kick at the Can

Well I have to tell you this
" Always the hardway " is often spoken of my trips to hunt,,,the boat trailer has had its last trip the rack which holds the rollers and tilts prety near broke off when unloading the boat ,,,so i says what else is gonna happen ,,well it wasnt long in finding out the motor was seized solid wouldnt even turn the prop, frig it i didnt go thru [day before -15 rewiring the trailer lites] what i have to get here at ocean side to say im packing up ,,,,no not me....its my only kick at the can for the end of season,,,,we load up the boat with gear and dog and hey O off we go row row your boat across the bay... well we cant get up inside the bay due to rowing so we opt for the farside ,,,knowing it would be a *&%&^% to row back against the wind and dropping tide...

So we make the other shore set up 9 eiders 13 black ducks and 5 geese ,,now in all my days with a wind in my face i have never taken a bird that had to fly down the shore and slide slip into the dekes or come down over the trees behind us into the dekkes,, but this was an extrodinary day .....winds in excess of 50 knotts in mini blizzards every other hour ,2foot white caps crashing on the shore and spray kicking up at our faces,,,,,most extrodinary ,,,,was black ducks big red legs where verywhere and they would try and land in and by the third blizzard we had 4 big redlegs ,daisy made an awesome double retrieve to my hand,,,now dont worry about her the water was near zero and the air temps were -15C the day before it was only -2 when we were out there ,i had a big hunk of foam and a jacket for her when she came out,i never caught her shivering at any point...all that extra treats put a little fat on her this season...

if it wasnt for some poor shootin we mite of had a 2 man limit of 8 on the blacks.....it was hard to judge a bird coming withthe wind at you on a 45 angle and then as they side slipped and climbed withthe wind up and gone over our heads.....right to left im in need of practice...

we watched hundreds of seaducks flying the main channel eiders, cockawee, and golden eyes and scoters and buffies.....and hundreds of geese too but because of where we had to set up it was not good for anything but black ducks....

so after the last blizzard we packed it up around 3 pm in a lull we struck out agaisnt the wind ,tide.... we landed way down the shore from where we put in,,, rowing was hard in the main channel ,,but we made er...jury rigged the trailer put boat on ,and aaway we were by dark 5pm i was home around 7pm long day 3am till 7 pm ....temps dropped out last nite went down to minus 18 and 20 and all the gear is a frozen heap in the back of the truck......ill try and seperate it today.....lol same temps for monday so my season is over ...

just gotta love them fun days out there....

as for pictures well the battery crapped out on me so im charging it and we will see if any pics made it...

yup cert- T-fyable at times,,,,some fisherman stopped to watch our olympic rowing effort and to make sure we made it,,,nah no 22 ft the motor wont start ever since it got cold this fall..it was never run in winter so i figure ill have to go all synthetic oils and lubes for low temp........we were in a 14 aluminum...

I have the worst luck with motors in winter.....i have not found any make of outboard to run in the stuff i hunt in ,,,sooner or later it wont run and if doesnt start once out there i dont trust it ever...as for rowing its not the first time lol...... lord thy waters are so deep and the bays are so wide please give me a tail wind just once.....taht bay is shallow except for the one channel 50 yards across ,you can walk it after the channel in mid tide...if no swells to the left is the atlantic ocean...

Me and the fellas plan on running the crap out of the motors and boats come fishin season as to work out any bugs ,[when its warmer] so i dont have these happen to me ....

ive tried gasline stuff seperators ,the best so far was to put a bunch of them handwarmer packets inside the cowling to kepp the carb and block semi warm,,,my next macgyvering will be a heater hood like for an airplane engine ,lol

Brian its was weird you could see them coming it would be blue bird sunny and bam! white out and howling ,seemed like every hour another one would coming swooping in on us...talk about wind burned face and eyes......

Yep, man I would have loved seeing all that while sitting in a truck with the heater on. I took my nephew out when he was younger, but he caught on about rowing to pick up the birds. Duck boats with running motors is it.

Jeez Shermie - I saw that thing winding up there on the weather channel and looks like you hit it square on. Trailer and motor hassles aside, looks like you made the best of it but I'll bet your arms are a little tender after that trip.

Boy, you two guys had a ton of steel in those bodies for nerves. Sounds like you had a wonderful hunt and you did it against some formidable odds! Way to go.

Thanks Al ,not sure about steel ,but its the kind of huntin we usualy get into if i can get out in a storm ... aside from the things murphy seems to have a hand in...

you should of seen the spray coming off the boats that went up inside against the wind and the 2 foot waves they were soaked in 5 minutes no doubt...

well the tail end of that system brought us more snow and i think as one can see its the time of hibernation for the boats

WOW! Great story and photos. How far did you have to row? I wouldn't want to try going across that with a motorized boat let alone rowing across it. It's amazing the things we do for "FUN"!
