last trip in the snowgoose for a while....

On my long list of things I want to get done before I start the Tolman is sprucing up the snowgoose. The way I figure it, the Tolman will take 2 years to build and the last thing I'll want to do is work on another boat after that. The bottom of the snowgoose is pretty beat up after the last several years of rocks and hard use. I want to remove the wedges and install some manually adjustable interceptor plates to try and dial the hull in once and for all. Flipping went easily, we pulled the motor and I whipped together a rolling jig this morning and rolled it this afternoon.

She looks naked! & twice as big without all the STUFF in and on her.

Glad everything went well with the flip. Looking good!

I hope you aren't seeing something I missed and are talking about Jen.

You can guess how my goose scouting went.

Tod,

I like how you incorporated your running lights under your bow decking. It looks like you made some access hatches in the cockpit sole, I was thinking about doing something simular with my Scaup. Do you find that the sole flexes excessively when moving around in the boat from having the hatches? Also its hard to see but it looks like you installed a shelf under the motorwell, seems like a good idea as well if your going to place your fuel tank in the bow anyway!

Sean,

Thanks, the lights work very well there. They meet USCG standards and are just out of the way, I haven't smashed one off yet. I exit the boat across the bow a lot and don't like bow lights there and I don't want them where they would interfere with a rode.

Yes, I have 14x14" hatches in the sole, one between each bulkhead. I don't find that the floor flexes excessivley, you can see it flex if you remove the hatches and bounce on the edge. The sole calls for 1/2" ply and I used meranti, so it is pretty stiff stuff anyway. The hatch sits on a shelf (1/2" projects, with 3 inches underneath) that runs all the way around the cutout and is made of 1/2 ply as well. The isn't a whole lot of distance in any place where the sole is not supported given the central stringer, bulkheads and where it meets the hull.

The shelf in the motorwell is a chart box (even lighted with a lid and latch), works well, but since the switch to GPS, it doesn't get used much.

Tod,

Thanks for the close up pictures. Beautiful work on the boat by the way. I am going to re-work my Scaup this spring, much like your doing right now to your Snow Goose. I was planning on building shelves underneath the side decking, as well as cutting the cockpit sole out and installing a bilge keel (plans did not call for it when I built it and I did not know any better to just incorporate one) and I think while I am at it I will include those sole hatches as well as a shelf in my motor well.

Love seeing the close up pictures, just when you think you have thought of everything, you see someone elses ideas and the wheels start turning again!

Boy you are tough. Making Jen do all the work while you run around taking pictures. :) Looks good and the barn looks like a ton of space. Nice work. HHG

Got to keep her busy :).

Barn is cool, every time I go in there it is like what a fun playhouse (and damn, this thing has twice as many square feet of floor space as our first house). I have construction pics I want to post that shows the construction sequence, pretty neat and man do those guys work fast!

Hope you guys got to enjoy the warmth over the weekend. Feels like turkey weather.

I bet it is a ton of fun having that much space. Ya the weather this weekend was great. We went to the club on Sunday to meet about our youth clay shooting team and then we got out and shot some 5 stand and some trap with Mary and Hank. Good time for sure. Back to cold weather again. I can't wait for turkey season now. HHG

Tod, This is the first time I have seen good, close up, shots of your boat. I have to say that she looks outstanding. I would love to see some pics of the build. Oh,and by the way, nice barn!!!!!!

Tod, I know we each have our own boat standards, but my boats are more abused then that before they are ever off the trailer for the first time!

Turn her over and start on the Tolman! (hehe)

Tod, Is your boat built to plans?? The shelves are great!!.. What length? I "NEED" to know more.:) I searched some of your early posts, but these same pictures appear in them.......

Charlie,

Boat is to plans more or less a typical snowgoose in dimensions. Decks are more curved so there is a little more height, plus lots of mods.

What pics did you find? No unpainted/construction pics? I have some, but not a ton - it was pre digital pics when I built.

Old ones are the same because I name them the same names and delete the old ones off my server. I'll post up my build pics when I get a chance, I'm in the middle of making a Birthday dinner for Jen.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEN!!!

I hope he's making you some kind of clam appetizer and a real nice venison tender loin meal.

Very best!

Great pics of a great boat. I own a snowgoose myself, though I did not build it. I was wandering about the wedges you talked about. What do they do and how do you install. Can they be added to a finished boat? I am on my 3rd season with the boat and love it.

No clams. She has a cold and wasn't excited about it. What would make you think we woudl have venison :). Broiled bottom round with parsnips and potatoes with wilted spinach. Chocolate custard for dessert.

Best to you all as well.

Wedges control porpoising, they are installed to the rear of the boat (think shingle shims on the rear) to change the shape fo the hull. You can see then in my pics.

Does your snowgoose porpoise at speed? What motor do you have on it?
