Late season goose hunt...

I took an opportunity to hunt the north shore yesterday. Winds were more than I wshed for but my buddy and I toughed it out and were blessed with a few flights that made the guns roar. Goose hunting over water is tough hunting, the first pair that locked up into the spread was deceiving to judge distance. I shot and connected, but the wind, current and poor judgement in taking the shot ended up crippling and loosing my bird. My Chessie, Chance, had no chance-- he gave chase but the currents were just too much.

We decided to stick it out for another hour and told my buddy, we will wait for 20 yd shots or less so the dog wont be wiped out. The next flight came in, a six pack, locked up skinny and wanting in to the shore. We dropped two, and I wasn't going to loose these so, any heads popping up took on another load. Chance retreived one, and my buudy went for the other. Several flights of 30+ birds came in so nice but the tide was dropping, and they were about 40yds out--- we just watch these birds pile in... a pair locked in on us, 15 yds.... take the pair!! whiff whiff whiff... We looked at each other in disbelief-- not to mention Chance, sitting by my side giving me a look. No bird, and the big flock lifted and left for Canada. We'll should we leave, we are losing water fast so we stick it out for another half hour. 4 find the rig, and I just watched as my buddy shot one, Chance was sent, and makes the retrieve. As all of you know, once you get up to take a leak, the birds will come in--- and my buddy gets up to water the frags, and a pair barrel in 15yds away.... whiffed my first shot crumbled the gander with the second-- the mate was outside of the range for me to shot and I held back. Chance made easy work for the big guy, and we decided to call the day. 4 geese taken, one lost-- most likely double banded... but what a fun day on the north shore. I do have a video of Chance retrieving and some pics, before the batteries died. I don't know how to download the video, and the pictures are not the tailgate type.. just of Chance, and my friend who invited me out. Oh I should mention, the reason why I took the invitation-- my buddy shot 3 on friday 2 were banded with sequential numbers (lucky bum).

I was thinking of going out tomorrow, but this was such a nice way to end the season that I think I'll stay inside.

Sounds like a great time! Hope you can get the pictures up. Tomorrow your last day too?

I've been lazy and staying close to home, drilling holes in the ice. Just finished the knife work on 3.3 lbs of Perch and Bluegill fillets. Fish fry tonight!

Best,
Scott

Cool story, Jack. I, too, am positive that the goose you lost had a $100 reward band on it!!!!! You did the wise thing in waiting for them to commit.

Scott,
Yeah it's the last day tomorrow. It went fast (just like last year). I never did the ice fishing thing before, looks fun but I freak when I hear those cracking sounds. I'll wait for the thaw-- love the taste of yellow perch.

Here's Chance bringing one in, the tide was way high and that grass is floating with the slush.

Here's Chance shaking off the snow.

LOL-- Thanks Al, I've gotten one of those in 27yrs of gunning. Everytime I loose a bird I think it's banded. My buddy found a double banded goose in the marsh decomoposed. He's lucky that way. I just find swans with neck collars and Tarsel bands. I wait till the thaw and look for white lumps left behind. It's like shed hunting (for those fur chasers out there) :0)

I like field hunting for geese, easier to judge the distance and they are landing right on top of you. Hunting over the open water is tough to judge the distance.
