Layout boat shoot.

Mac and I set up down near our place in Tagish. I built this boat when he was 3 or 4 and it was our #1 duck hunting rig for years. It still makes for a fun layout shoot.

There aren't a lot of divers around just now, and most of the scoters have left but we got a few passes. I use a 14' with a 15 hp to tend.

There always seems to be one widgeon that comes for a look.

The design goal with that boat was that it fit in the back of a pickup with the tailgate up, so it is 8'x4', rowable, powerable, and towable. It turned out to be all those things.

And we got some grouse too. Lots of chickens around this year. I have a spot that usually holds three or four Ruffies, and in two walks the dogs got 18 flushes! I only hit one. Mac and some friends were up in the alpine hiking around and he got 5 willow ptarmigan and 3 rock ptarmigan with a .22. Too bad they were a bit roughed up by the time he got home as the willow ptarmigan had the nice brown heads on with the bodies transitioning in to white. That's the one I'd want to get mounted.

All our other shooting has been evening pass shooting for puddlers and I don't ever get any good pictures in that light.

Mike,
Thanks for sharing the photos. I love layout hunting open water. Have you ever dropped a fishing line over the side while you were hunting?

Actually Dave, I haven't fished out of that layout, but often I'll cast a few and take a couple of pike home with me after a puddle duck AM shoot.

Carl we usually begin to freeze up in late Oct.

We probably wont even have a frost until Thanksgiving!

Glad y'all are having a good season. Love the boat.

You're living a dream Mike ! Thanks for sharing.

My daughter and son in law lived in Alaska while he was in the service a few years ago. Unfortunately I never got to visit them while they were there.

great post, thanks for sharing Mike. I love the location variation of folks on this site since we have to wait until after thanksgiving to chase anything but doves, teal, and golf course geese :)

Enjoyed these photos, Mike. Thanks so much. It was good to see you still getting into the birds at this time of the year.
