Layout build

I built this sunfish layout with the sunfish hull upside down and a plywood bottom. This was mostly a Failure because I was hoping it would come in light enough for two guys to throw around. It is not my friend and I are able to move it but it weighs almost as much as a mighty boys Two man layout. Its usable but I over built it and got carried away. I built the entire boat for 350-375 dollars with a lot of things I already had including the plywood. It?s over 5 feet wide I wanted it stable it has a 4 inch drop box an completely open cockpit that is covered by a gray lap cover. Josh~

Great project! Got any photos of it earning its keep?

BTW: Your "bottoms up" design reminds me of the time some waterfront dwellers called in the Cavalry : fire engines, ambulances, squad cars, choppers - because they mistook our flagging Broadbill from our Scooter as an SOS from an overturned vessel.....

All the best,

SJS

A person unfamiliar with layout hunting might call the marine police reporting a capsized boat with a person aboard :)

Neat project.

Steve, That's funny as long as it happened to someone else.

Good concept. Lets call that phase one. If you look around there are a ton of old 14 ft fiberglass runabouts laying around for just about nothing. Seasons over I must be thinking to hard.

The biggest issue was the rocker built into the hull. When I laid it upside down onto flat plywood I could push it almost flat but it twists the hull out of square. I installed bulkheads inside with it facing right side up which was a mistake because it made the boat rigid and difficult to work with. I have 5 more sunfish hulls this particular one had substantial damage so it was no loss trying this concept.
