The size and coloration difference are quite appearent once you have them in hand, the scaup is a much darker brown vs the RH being more of a tan color. One note, the scaup is this years bird, the RH is older.

Wish I had a greater to put next to them, the greaters are as big as the redhead. Quite a size difference.

Along the same lines...here are a greater and lesser scaup side by side. The greater is like a mallard, the lesser like a fat wood duck.
