Letting their leaves fly (no photos)

i got the hounds out today for a chance at a swamp rooster

the corn was still on the stalk and made it pretty tough to do much other than to walk through endless green hallways

some of the corn is well over 7 feet tall
there is no way i can see over it or through it

about 2 yards into it
a dog just vanishes

ginger stayed close to me
usually within a few steps (and well out of the corn)

alex would disappear and i’d start to wonder if he was lost
or on scent somewhere
just about when i’d get ready to yell out for him
he’d pop out of the greenery about 30 feet away

his long pink tongue like a flag
his ancient scarred & seed covered face seemed to have a dog smile on it

this is what he was made to do
he is a working dog

and is not happy unless he is at work
he can chase cows or sheep or coyotes

he can fetch papers or fowl
or defend the home front

it is his calling to work
i am lucky he chose to work with me

it seemed good to walk those fields with those old dogs again

alex put one up but there was no way i could get a shot off
it flushed wild and away

i heard & watched it sail off in the other direction

later on we kicked up a rooster

but it flew right behind the berries and cackled
& gave us hell for trying

we saw a dozen mallards work the chute below the lake
circle back
to work it again
twisting and flashing corkscrews through their sky

framed by cottonwoods
yellowed and turning

giving in to autumn
letting their leaves fly

re: Lord Alfred

I do not know. Ancestors.com may provide the answer. It took my family back to 1715 and would have gone further had there been written records.
