Little Miss Butterball- live report

Got a chance to get Little Miss Butterball wet this morning. We're out on Virginia's Eastern Shore today. Lots of potential action of "her kind", but don't usually shoot too many "Dippers" as they call them down here.

Here's a pic of her in action with a couple of my burlapped blocks-

And here is one I managed to scratch down over the toy ducks-

So far, I've been busy. Not shooting a lot, but seeing quite a few birds. Especially Brant, but they aren't legal until Saturday.

Later for now...

I used to feel a little sheepish about shooting bufflehead, but no more.

First, they are a real challenge to hit being so small and swift. At least that's what I tell myself every time i miss one.

Second, they're quite tough birds. A few weeks ago I shot one at about 20-30 yards, and had to row after it to finish it off with a head shot.

When this bird was cleaned, I found that three number 2 steel pellets had hit its chest yet not penetrated it's skin. In essence they bounced off.

Third, they taste decent as long as you don't overcook them.

Fourth, there's not many other abundant duck species around here to hunt so far this season.
