little project from last fall

I got this boat froma friend of mine last summer. He built it from plans for a 12hr canoe. Then decked it to be more like a kayak. He used it a few times then hung it fromthe rafters in his Dad's shop for the next ten years. This is what I started with.

I started by stripping the deck and removing the cock pit combing. I found the empty milk jugs and a few mouse nests under the decking.

I then cut off about 3' and added a solid mohag transom.

I redecked the front 3' and glassed it in, and added a removable slat floor.

I finished by recoating the inside with a few coats of resin and then painting.

The finishing touch was a seat / back rest. I ended up installing some bungee to help with grassing also.

Thanks for looking. Luke

Luke,
very nice photos. Thanks for posting them. Have you put it in the water yet? Let us know how it rides with a paddle. I always liked the 10 hour canoe project. It is a simple design that gets a person on the water. I also like building old school with a little framing just because of the tradition, esp here where I live.
Coolest part of your photos was showing how a boat can be modified if you have a saw and some ideas about what you want.

Nice job on your project.

I'll bet if she could talk the boat would be saying, Thanks, for getting me down from the rafters and back in business.

That is amazing what you created from the old design. I really like your modification. Nice pics to go with this. Enjoyed seeing your pup and that tent in the back yard. Sure is a lot of green grass in that first picture.

Great conversion. It'll serve you well and provide lots of fun, memories. Be sure and let us know how some adventures turn out in it.

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I have had it in the water a few times. It's not as stable as I thought it would be but still pretty nice to paddle. I took it out one evening a few weeks before our southern zone opened last year. I tucked it up against an old blow down and layed down in it for a while. I had a bunch of little flocks of gwt cruise past at about 10-15yrds. They didn't seem to notice it all. I used it to hunt a few times but never shot anything. Shortly after finishing this project I picked up my higbee sneak box and spent most of my time hunting in that. I do hope to use this boat a littel more this coming fall. I have a few small fresh and brackish water creeks I want to try.

One more pic. I think we were waiting for paint to dry at this point.
