Little things in life---NDR

With a few years under my belt it didn't take too long to figure out the importance of the "little things in life that leave their mark"---something that impacts you. Here is just one of them that made a difference for Bev and myself.

Bev and I enjoyed some freshly cut peaches on our cereal yesterday morning and then decided that we needed some canned. Nothing quite like enjoying something like this in the middle of January on a dish of ice cream, making a peach malt in the blender, or coming home from a duck hunt and smelling fresh peach cobbler that Bev made.

We put up 7 quarts yesterday and will do the same today.

Hi Jake,
Mine too! This particular Elberta peach tree is beginning to look a little sick on one side and I'm thinking that we have that same type of virus. Problem is that if I cut it down and replant, by the time the tree would start bearing fruit, I don't know if I want to be climbing a ladder then----Darn!

Habi is coming along just fine. Some time this coming season, I'll be taking her with. As for the chocolate, that was Cayenne. We decided to take her out to the lake especially for some exercise. We think she is pregnant so we'll be keeping an eye on her. She absolutely loves retrieving bumpers.

Sorry to hear of the aphids, Sherm. Too bad you don't have a million lady bugs and praying mantis in your neck of the woods. Glad you liked those pup pics.

Well, Dennis, are you going to be able to sweet talk ducks from eastern Nebraska over to western Iowa this year? Glad you liked those shots. As for the fires, the Little Bear fire which is about 90 miles east/southeast of us is close to 38,000 acres burned. The good news is that it is 40% contained. A lot of houses have burned to the ground in this one. So far over 240 structures.
As for the Whitewater/Baldy Complex fire it is now 51% contained and has burned a total of almost 420 square miles! The largest fire ever for the state of New Mexico. We have been having some very favorable winds during the past two weeks and have not had to deal with smoke. We are fortunate.

Al,

As stated by others, great shots as usual. Regarding the comment about not wanting to climb the ladder to pick peaches, the orchard where my wife and I go to get our peaches for canning, has their trees pruned back to where you never have to get on a ladder to get the fruit you want. I'm 6'2" and can easily reach the highest fruit. A late frost got all my trees so I'm guessing fruit will be a bit scarce in this part of the country this year.
That Habi is one sweet looking little lady. I'll bet you really have a lot of fun with her.

Dave

Peaches are my favorite too, Al. Unfortunately, brown rot has taken my fruit for the last three years, and I'm starting to lose hope. But i grab my sprayer every 2 weeks and continue to fight...we'll see how this year goes!

Thanks so much for the comments, Dave. I appreciate the advice you gave me on trees that have been pruned. Made me aware of my many trips on Door County and the northern part of Michigan where so much fruit is grown.
I will make sure they are taken care of this winter.
As for Habi, my wife continues to say that she is beyond hope when it comes to me spoiling my pup. I do enjoy her company.

Hi Frank,
I sure hope you can get a control on what seems to be taking your tree down. I sprayed our peach trees just before they first blossomed and then just one more time after they leafed out. So far, so good. One of my neighbors took out all of her peach trees---some sort of beetle I believe.

I sure would like to try that combo of peaches and mangoes. Glad you liked the pics of the pups. Here is some info I took off the internet about the Little Bear fire that is 90 miles to the east/southeast of us. Yesterday while driving north on I-25 I watched about 15 BLM water tankers heading south most likely towards Ruidoso where the Little Bear fire is. Just think, 224 houses burned to the ground already. I'm thinking about all of those people involved with everything they own----gone!
By the way when you see "CREWS" type 1, they are talking about those elite firefighters called "Hot Shots".
