Long distance trailering-one more question

-Got the trailer serviced, repacked bearings, replaced seals, etc. It all looks good
-wondering about the tires....look good, no cracks, good tread but 10+ years old. Trailer guy (who is not in the tire biz so has no ulterior motive) said he wasn't sure he would haul the trailer 850 miles on tires that old.
-The local tire shop can replace them with a 6ply tire for $80 for the pair. Sounds cheap if it keeps me off the break down lane of the interstate.
-any comments? would you guys replace them or should I save the 80 bucks?

Do you have 2 spares already? If not, I would het the Super Walmart or Tractor Supply and get another pair of wheels and tires, for maybe $20 more. Then save what you have as the spares.
 
I replaced my crummy tires with goodyear marathons. Two trips to Canada and two to LA . Got mine at the tirerack.com . Pricey but solid and no real visible uneven wear. Highly recomended. bob
 
As dave said get new tires and rims for a little more check eastern marine.com they have the best prices.
 
I also am a big fan of two spares. Everyone who has seen my trailer has had a "lightbulb" moment and probably went to find a second spare. Feels pretty ugly when one tire gives up the ghost and the one left is the same age and has the same miles on it. I think I am going to check on the spare hub idea.
 
See if they can balance them. I like the idea of a second spare after having tires slashed. Since then I cary the spare in the back of the suberban, Tree huggers suck!

Wow Phil, where do you live? I need to stay away from there. I know it is giving the misserable tree huggers a victory but just the same I'll stick to N.D. and other places where we are welcome. It would be fun to catch them in the act though wouldn't it?
 
A buddy of mine deals in tire repair& used tires. He said in IA tis against state law to sell or mount tires that have reached the 10 yr. mark. He said he will not sell any 8 yr. or older, dosen't trust them.

Tom, I live in NJ. Situation happened in RI. It was duriing a DWater jambore two yrs back. Also happened to a bunch of others that weekend.

Well, our caravan (two cars packed to the gills, one pulling a duck boat and the other with a overloaded roof rack carrier) made it to the People's Republic of Minnesota without a hitch. Uff da! The prep for the duck boat trailer was well worth the trouble. I had absolutely no problems with the trailer. In fact, I got 24 mpg at 60mph with some help from a west wind all the way from Billings. I did buy a month's worth of boat and trailer insurance that included roadside assistance for $15. So, maybe I worred more than I should have but I would make a long distance haul with a boat trailer again and not try to overthink it this time. Good tires, good bearings and grease, good lights and good to go. Bought my MN vehicle tags today and a MN driver license so I can buy the resident hunting and fishing licenses in a few months. Living in an apartment in Sartell right not while we decide whether to build. The moving van with our furniture should get here tomorrow. Interesting observation...I expected to see lots of semi-tame mallards and Canadas on the many retention ponds in these suburban neighborhoods but there are also lots of paired up blue wings. I never thought of them as apartment complex pond birds.
