We had a mini duckboats.net get together this morning. John Livoti hosted Rufus Brinn , Dave Diefenderfer, my uncle Rich Geminski and myself for a south shore brant hunt. Here are a few photos:

Rufus in his mini Schellinger and John in his BBIII. They had a young seal pup swim right up to them here, just a few feet away in crystal clear water.

The seal swam up to where you can see Rufus' reflection in the water.

I really dig the grassed up boats that you lay back in like that. We don't have the grassy shorelines around here like you have in those pictures. I wish we did, I would like to have and use boats like those.

Nice to see that there are still some bay houses around. When I was a kid the marshes up west were dotted with those little houses. One of my clamdigger buddies motor broke down on a cold January afternoon up around Freeport, this was back in the sixties, no cellphones, no radio's. My buddy poled up to an island with a little gunnin shack on it and spent the night. Of course back then no one locked their doors, for just such emergencies. There was no firewood for the pot bellied stove, my friend picked up all the dry driftwood he could find, this lasted for a couple of hours, after that he burned decoys, there were enough to last the rest of the night. He said the wood ones burned much better than the cork ones. For years my buddy would reminisce about that cold night, and try to imagine what those old blocks would be worth on todays market! Rich

Chris:
Can always count on you for great pics, looks like everyone had a great time.

Good Luck for the balance of the hunting season.

Rich's story reminds me of a chapter out of "Autumn Passages...Baymans Soltice" by Norm Strung. A simplier life.. /This is progress??? Glad to see you had a good shoot. Dave's a good guy.

Phil

Looks like you had a nice hunt. I like the Schellinger skiff I would like to see it grassed up with spartina ather that fast grass. Also your uncles old style hunting coat I love that pattern.

Rufus told me it was a one of a kind Roy boat. It was originally made for Roys nephew who outgrew it. Maybe he can comment further on the boat...

Here are a few more photos of this weekends hunt.

Dave running his BBSB

Dave getting settled into the marsh

Here is Dave settled into his spot on the marsh and ready for some action.

The boat in tow is a 8' Roy Shellinger boat that Rufas brought along. We used it as a decoy sled when heading out then Rufus climbed in and he disappeared into the marsh.I would have taken more photos of him but I could not see him.

There were plenty of Mergs that stopped by the rig. All but one got a free pass. The one that didn't will be going fishing as newly tied flies. I will have to do a before and after shot of this one.

We can't forget about Mocha doing the hard work.

Dave also has a nice looking Black duck rig

And Rufus has a nice rig of Brant. If you look in the background you can see one of neighborhood Seals checking us out

I'll get some more photos posted later when I have some more time.

It was a nice weekend spent with a bunch of Duckboats.net members.

Thanks for all the pics. It is a beautiful place to hunt. My L.I. experiences are all of the north shore, deeper water and fading memories.

Thanks for the pictures John.

Looks like you all had a great time. I wouldn't mind hunting up that way someday.

I can smell the salt air from here.
