Looking for 40+ mpg , Jetta? Cruz? ??

Actually Phil, that's what I am looking at. Can't see spending for a new one, especially a diesel. I have had very good luck over the years buying cars with 60K on them at basically one half to one third the sticker price. In all cases I put another 100-125K on them. When it comes to diesels though it looks like I will have to bump that mileage figure up a ways to get the price where I want it.
 
YARIS!!!!!!!!!!!! i have one and i love it. my average mpg is 34.5 with most interstate travel being 45mpg at 65mph 38mpg at 70mph and 30mpg at 80mph and 25mpg at 110mph.....well..... haha.
the car i bought is a two door hatchback manual trans, windows ac and cd player for $15,000. plenty of room in the car for four adult males and the back seat fold down almost flush. its a simple car for just commuting its great. 30-35 bucks a fill up lasts me all week and sometimes two weeks.

beats driving my 5.4 v8 full size 150 all over. now shes just a duck/buck truck.

Ed, Hadn't thought about a Yaris. I've rented them while on vacation and always liked the way they handled. One time two of us put 8 - 80 cu ft. scuba tanks in one when we were driving around Curacao shore diving.

We've been very happy with our Honda Fit. It gets a little under 40 mpg (mixed driving) with snow tires and a little better with summer tires.

It's a great compact wagon that will tote a TON of gear. Pretty short money too.
 
The Toyota Prius hybrid 51 highway mpg 48mpg city average 50 mpg. My daughter just bought a 2011 Prius new and saved several thousand over a 2012. She traded in her 2002 Toyota Celeca and negotiated an out the door price of $18500.00 I think she did a good job of dealing with four differant salesmen. She had them stumped when she said that the price of the car had nothing to do with how much the payment or the loan is for. A proud Dad.

THat would be a great car for Pete, my mother just bought one too.
 
She'll like her pirus. My wife drives a 2008 with 120,000 miles on it now .43 highway @ 75mph. 50 around town. Have only changed the brakes once and a set of front wheel bearings. It will become my duck wagon this up coming season if gas much higher....$4.05 today. In the winter I swap out the summer radials with a full studded set.

I had an old Jetta diesel 87,88 it got 50 -55 miles a gallon. They have come along way from then. I didn't know the new ones were diesels',quiet,no smell. PLus you can burn french fry oil hmmmmm french fries smell
 
Two of my six VWs were purchased used. It is a great way to go. Of my current vehicles the 2011 Golf Wagon was purchased new but the '08 Touareg was purchased with 50,000 miles on it. I like it very much but I would prefer not to discuss the fuel economy. :) Let's just say it is less than half of the Golf.
 
My Prius just got 53 MPG and 501 miles on the last tank of gas... It cost $36.61 to refill the tank...If everyone drove a vehicle that was as efficient the price of gas would plummet... food for thought.

Mike, is that city driving, highway driving or a combination? I am curious how you do with mainly highway driving.

My wife gets 43 winter highway(studs) 75 miles an hour. At 70 that goes up to 46 . When it's warmer she gets 46 at 75 and 50 at 70.Here in the mountains the mileage isn't as good as it would be for you. Ontario is relatively flat but that would be the same for almost any car. The newer Pirus's have a camry motor instead of the corolla motor. The new model with the upgraded battery plug in , will travel further on just battery but it is the same exact drivetrain as the present 2011/2012 We live out in the sticks so most of our driving is highway 13 miles to town if i take my time 55 miles an hour it's right around 50-52 . mpg. Most of my hunting is in the St Lawerence valley,my swamp is 40 miles away and my other spots 60 to 65 miles,LAke champlain 60 so driving my f250 just isn't going to happen.
 
It will be while before I need another car but I will definitely check it out when the time comes. Can you tow with a Prius? :)
 
Maybe with the new wagon pirus 5 but doesn't get the mileage and the cost is quite high. The beauty of a plain jane Pirus is you can get them cheap. So I'm thinking no. I've been under mine and I don't see anyway you are getting a hitch on the thing. I will be using roof racks and a box.
 
I use my Touareg to tow my boat. During last fall's moose hunt I put on around 2500 miles over ten days and averaged about 23 mpg (US). Not quite as good as my Golf gets. LOL
 
bro in law has a prius, yes you can tow...but not much. He put a hitch on to use a small garden trailer or pull his bigger one that is empty to town for one of the relatives to use. In addition, uses it for the bike carrier. Not sure what the rating would be, but yes, you can tow....
 
Eric, do you know if it was after market or from the dealer? I would love to put a hitch on it once it becomes mine. Wife has to drive it 6 more months before we will get a new one.
