Looking for adhesive backed rubber sheet/tape

My layout gets pretty banged up from contact with the tender, especially in waves. I'm thinking a strip of rubber around the edge of my layout will offer a bit more protection. I need about 30 running feet by maybe 4-5" wide with adhesive on one side only - maybe 1/16 or 3/32 thick. I think 1/8 will be too thick to bend properly. Went on a tour of Home Depot, Menards, Gander Mountain, Farm & Fleet and Ace Hardware last night and struck out. Anybody have any ideas on where to get it?

Look at McMaster-Carr, they have all sorts of rubber strips with adhesive backing in various shapes/sizes. Good luck.
 
The problem is attaching a real rub rail. This is a Kevlar MLB so the edge is real thin. I've seen rubber tape applied to other guys boats but finding it is difficult. I see on McMaster-Carr what I think I want but would really like to get my hands on it before spending the money, flexibility is everything.
 
Thanks Paul, I think I see what I need. Now that I know what it is I can see if I can find it where I can get my hands on it before buying.
 
What about rubber roofing? It is thin and pliable. You could use the roll on glue that they use to apply it as well. Roll it on the edge of the boat and on the rubber strip, wait for it to tack and then press it on.

You can probably give a local contractor a call and get the strip of it for free. I'm not sure if you have to buy a roll at the hardware store or if you can buy it by the foot.

I have done a fair amount of business with McMC. I have never had a problem returning stuff. No questions asked nice and easy like Cabelas used to be.
 
Darn Pete, if you'd asked a week ago I could have brought you some. The company I worked for in Florida uses it and purchased from McMaster-Carr.
 
Pete, the boating section at Bass Pro has a keel protecor strip that sounds like what you might be looking for. It is supposed to be bullet proof and has it's own adhesive. It is red but I think it should take paint. Kinda pricey.
 
I looked at that Howard. It looks way too stiff for my use, is pricey, and red. It was my first thought until I did more research.
 
Awe come'on ED, a friend would have anticipated me needing it and brought me some just because :) Thing is, I've known for months that I wanted it and just procrastinated...........again.
 
Pete you getting ready to head up on Lake Michigan in the next couple weeks? I'm headed up again the end of next week. This might be the last year I don't have to attend the teachers convention or work in the classroom. So I'm going to take full advantage. Unfortunately my hunting buddy's brother is getting married that saturday. Luckily the weeding is close.
 
For a typical boat that would be ideal but with the layout being right at the water's surface and having fenders that float there is no guarantee that the fender will be able to do it's job when needed. In normal conditions, ie calm or minimal seas this isn't a problem but when both the tender and the layout are bouncing around it becomes controlled crashes likely as not.
 
Well, I ordered from McMaster on Weds and amazingly enough it was here yesterday - too good to be true? Yep. It was soft rubber .125" by 2.5" and adhesive backed, all good EXCEPT it was adhesive backed on BOTH sides - crap.
