Looking for adhesive backed rubber sheet/tape

Pete,

What about non adheasive backed, and use contact cement on both sides. Actually not sure how water resistant contact cement is, but you could use 5200 or some other marine grade adheasive. I'd tape it in place untill the bond is set. I get 1/8" thick rubber strips cut to my size locally all the time. If you're not sure of a rubber/hose supply house in your area, I could contact my counterpart at our facility in Whitewater, I'm quite sure he uses these as well.

That may be the next thing to look at. PM me your source or info and I'll check it out - I was just in Whitewater yesterday but it's only about 10 miles. I'd like something with a very low durometer so it will mold around the edge of the boat. The stuff I got from McMaster is great in that regard.

You know, the more I think about it.............I'm going to try painting a little piece and see if it covers the adhesive

Pete,

Did you find a solution for your rub rail needs? I'm asking for selfish reasons. I need the same thing when tying my sculling boat up to a dock on the lake.

Chris,

I got some .125" x 2.5" thick rubber tape from McMaster Carr that looked good until I got it. It was adhesive on both sides instead of one and it is very, very soft. I put it on anyway but the adhesive didn't stick real well so I used 3M's system 77 spray on adhesive that worked pretty good. Then I spray painted the top side to cover the adhesive but that is not a very good solution. All in all, it did the job and protected my layout but it is not the solution I would recommend to someone else.................I'm still looking.

Pete,

Sorry to hear that the tape from McMaster-Carr didn't work out. However, while reading your post I remembered that cars from the 70's and 80's used to come with an adhesive backed "door scratch protector" that was maybe 1/2 wide and 3/6 to 1/2 inch thick. I know that my 1972 Chevrolet Impala came from the factory with it. I guess I'm telling my age now, huh?!!

Anyway, I watched the body shop fix a repair to my driver's door one day and they literally peeled the adhesive protector off of the back of the door paint protector and pressed it on. I only owned the car another year or so but the stuff never lost its grip on the painted metal door. I wonder if we could find that stuff anywhere? Maybe Year One the classic car parts house would have it? I'll do some checking.
