Looking for some hunting pants

Was at Cabelas this past weekend looking at a Nils Ice Auger deal (found the 8" hand powered one on sale for a great price and bought it). While there I picked up some deals on a Max 4 Chamois shirt ($14.00) and a nice Max 4 Turtleneck ($20). Kind of needed both as my prior outerwear was very worn out and used up. While there, I thought how nice it would be to walk into my local quickmart in the morning wearing a complete set of camo rather than the powder blue sweat pants I've been wearing for way to long (everyone got a picture of that in their mind). I'd be stying then.

As I was trolling the aisles looking for a nice pair of pants, I came across some that while OK, weren't what I think I'm looking for. Need some advice.

I don't think I want insulated pants or pants that have a fleece lining. These would be too hot. I prefer to layer and like wearing long johns under whatever my outwear is if it is cold enough to do so. Drake had a nice looking pair of pants but they were fleece lined.

No cotton. Microtech would be a nice comfy fabric I'm thinking.

Strap in the bottom to keep the things from riding up when putting on waders would be nice to have.

Oh yeah, and the most important part - they have to look better than the powder blue sweats presently being used. I know this is the toughie...

Here you go Mark. It's all I wear for hunting pants anymore, under waders or not they are the best pair of pants I have had. I hear that they may stop selling them so if you want a pair get them now. I bought mine two sizes bigger per the reviews and they were correct, the sizing is wrong. They used to be full length and now only 32". Still a great pair of pants.

Pete,

I bought two pair for deer hunting. I love wool and these are washable! Does it get any better?

I haven't tried them under waders. Personally I wear cotton pants in the early season for the pockets. Then I switch to fleece wader pants when it gets cooler, then when it's cold I wear long underwear, fleece wader pants and a breathable waterproof outer pant to keep the moisture that condenses on the inside surface of the waders from soaking back into my to clothing. Neoprene waders don't breath!

If you don't mind me asking how great was the price on the hand auger and did they have any more?
I've been thinking about going to a Nils to save weight. From the videos I have seen they are super fast and easy. They aren't the easiest augers to find.

For my duck hunting, I pretty much wear black fleece pants. Best deal I've found is from Campmor, but cheap versions can be found anywhere. Warm, breathable, don't absorb water, and they dry overnight.

For upland and deer hunting, I like these. http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/38505?feat=38506-ppxs&dds=y

I got mine at the seconds store 4 years ago for $20, and they are still going strong.

I got lucky on the Nils. I tried to buy a used one off of Craiglist but as always, I was second in line. The guy selling them said he knew Cabelas just got in some 6" hand Augers. I called and put one on hold. Drove up and they had four 6" augers for $119.00 minus 20% (all augers are 20% off). I told the guy I really wanted the 8" but was told over the phone that they were out. He went in the back room and found an 8" auger for me. Got to the checkout lane and the total was $96 not including tax. I told the cashier I thought it was mis marked. She called back and was told they were $119 less 20% or $96. I tried to make it right so I don't feel too bad about geting a heck of a deal.

I have been looking all season for one of these without much luck. My plan is to compare this to my new Eskimo 8" Shark and then decide which one I am going to keep. I plan to have a "drill off" in a couple of days. I'll let you know. Weight of the auger verses effort of the auger is what I am trying to decide as well.

I've tried everything. Best thing I have found for under the waders is a base layer of thin Bergolene underwear (I think EMS still carries them), and then I'll wear a pair of Under Armor thin fleece pants over those. I don't feel too hot or too clammy, even after walking and wading for a bit. They are also comfy under a pair of insulated bibs - great for sitting in a deer stand or walking in the woods during deer season.

That is a good price on the 6" and a great price for the 8". I've been looking for either a Nils or a Normark Fin-Bore but we don't get many of them around here.
It will be interesting to hear what you think of it.

I took a pair of Browning camo pants to Alaska caribou hunting...windstopper, slight nap on the pants(sort of a micro-fleece), zipped legs, padded knees, and they worked real well in temps below 55-60 without long john bottoms. They cut the wind, dried fast if wet from rain on the nap, dried fast if they got wet wading a stream, or mucking around on the tundra. Now in the summer I would not even think of them as they would be to hot. I will have to look at what model they are. Ok I went and looked - Escape
