Looking for White Cedar and Basswood

John, try to find a copy of "Duck Decoys" by Eugene Connett
He goes into detail on how to construct a 3 piece laminated wood decoy.
He used 2" white pine, but cedar should be lighter, and the construction would be the same.

Frankly, it's a lot easier to make them of cork, and that's more traditional for "here", but if you can find good wood they should last forever.

I have a Tom Matus book that describes how to both make a decoy out of two pieces and hollow it. I have the antique style book, I used Cabela's points to get it, but he also has a traditional decoy book. I wouldn't put a rattle in it. Everyone will know that it is hollow by its weight. Everyone that needs to know anyways.

If you go the lamination route, works best to run the pieces thru a thickness planer if you have one available to smooth out the surfaces and eliminate any "cup" the boards might have. If you can't, when you go to epoxy the halves together, use some wood flour mixed in to fill any gaps.

If your going the mail order route try Carl Guay 207) 499-2730 37 Guay Ln,Dayton, ME 04005

I heard he took over for the person I used to get my cedar from.
I havent got any from him, but the stock I have left over from his predeceasor (sp?)
is great stuff.
