Lost Alviso scull boat plans

Not sure if this is the place, but I just felt inclined to post a copy of some very old scull boat plans I found years ago. Its for a south bay sneak boat, better known as an Alviso scull boat. I built a modified version years ago and use it to this day.

OK... I tried to attach HEIC photos but it says invalid file type. Any advise?

You can email me the HEIC files and I can convert them or you can do it yourself with Windows Paint. This place is fine, but I can post them to the Resources section which is where plans and such should go for long term storage and retrieval. Take a look at the Resources section and you will see what I mean. Did you take a picture of the plans with your phone? HEIC is a format only your phone understands. Best to stick with more universal formats like jpg and png. You can tell your iphone to use jpg by going to Settings -> Camera -Formats and checking Most Compatible. Of course that will only fix this issue for future pictures. Do you have the plans on paper? A digital scanner is usually better for the fine details unless you have a DLSR camera set up specifically for scanning pictures.

At any rate, YES, we want those plans! If you want to mail them to me to do the scanning I'm happy to and will return them to you ASAP.

Great! The only plans I have are printed jpg files off the net from 10 years or so ago. I'll try to change the file type and send them to you. I'd hate to see them lost for eternity. Apparently, the Alviso was a popular design in the SF bay years ago.

The latter, so I just took new photos of the paper plans printed from past jpg files (does that make sense?) I do not have any original plans. I sent you the pictures of the plans directly so you can post them where needed. I'll also attach them here if that's ok?

I've seen those before. In fact I found them in the archived specs section and forgot they were there. I will add them to the Resources section in the plans area for scull boats. Thank you very much for bringing them to my attention.

That's fantastic! You even have a narrative which is great. I built my boat using the plans but incorporated a bit of a vee in the bottom, used no frames and used stitch and glue construction. It's a fairly light and very solid boat I'm sure will last my lifetime. Thanks for saving this.

Thank you for approaching me about it. I hadn't run across those plans in who knows how long. They need to be in the Resources section where people can easily find them. I've got a bit of a backlog of updates to make and hopefully I'll be able to get to it soon and add them. I have added it to my duckboats "to-do" list and once something is on it's only a matter of time. By the way, I googled the designer, Bill Grunewald, and found some wonderful information and pictures of him and his boat shop. He is on several historical registers and has a large legacy. I'll put some of that info in the Resources section too. Great stuff.

Any chance you can explain how you built this boat with the stitch and glue method? I would really appreciate any feedback as l would love to try and build one.

I am so sorry I missed this! I'm actually building another boat right now using the stitch and glue method. I\m making a youtube of it. I'll attach the link. I have old pictures and such of the Alviso build. Perhaps I'll put together a vid on that if I have time. Check out this link, and my channel if you like.

Have you started your build? When/if I have time, I could think about an Alviso specific video. I think I have a few pictures I could cobble together something. It would be at least a few weeks from now.

I have not started the build, if you have any pictures building the Alviso in the stitch and glue method that would be of great help. I have never used a strong back and have limited experience using the stitch and glue method to put a centerline on a small duck boat that I made years ago. I made it so I could remove 4' of the bow and store the 11.5' boat in the 8' bed of my capped truck. No need for a trailer and all my dekes locked up with the boat. I am hoping to try and find away to make the Alviso in stitch and glue for strength and lightweight construction, but possibly have the nose nest inside the cockpit as well for transport in the back of my truck bed. While it's nice to have a layout boat with a motor, some of the backcountry roads beat up boat trailers, and in my opinion the harder the path to the ducky spots, the bigger the rewards!

Stowing the nose inside the cockpit is an awesome idea! I've considered that myself, but I'm not sure how practical it would be. I've even considered building a shorter boat with a pointy bow and scullers stern that I could attach a "submerged, extended keel" forward of the bow. It could be a multipuropse boat was my intention. SO many ideas... I do have some pictures of my alviso build, but I'm not sure how good they are. I still even have the build frames I used. Where are you located? I'm putting an alviso build on my youtube "to do" list. Oh, and by the way, I don't really have that much knowledge. I've read a few books and built a few boats, but I'm not a boat builder. However, I have a friend who is, I believe, a really knowledgeable boat builder and I might propose a youtube interview if he's game. We'll see. In the meantime, I'm attaching my next build video. Not the best, but the next one will be better (when the boat gets finished).

How short do you think could you build the Alviso?
