Louise visits FL Part I

Well Louise showed up safely and I had to agree with Steve. When we saw the pictures, we thought...ooooohhhhhhh what a cute little lady. Then when she showed up, got her out of her box and we thought WOW. She's a big lady. That's what a Victoria's Secret model would look like if she were a REAL woman with curves.

The first hunt was a very quick hunt and very eventful. On the way out to the hunting spot, not very far from my house, I hit a deer with my truck. Bashed up my bumper pretty good and the blasted thing got up and ran away, flipping me the bird as he did so. But onto the hunting spot we went.

It was COLD. Not much flying. Even with a mile and a half paddle to the spot, and thus a mile and a half back to the truck, we were back in the truck and heading out by 9. But it sure wasn't a bad day. Very slow, but somewhat productive with a bird each.

It was decided that since it was so early, I wanted to go see if there were ducks on some lakes around town that I haven't seen before. So off we went. On the way back from the second lake, I was sitting at the stop light and BAM. Some woman runs into the back of my canoe, which is kept on a boat trailer. This was the first time I'd ever not cursed my canoe being a big over-engineered aluminum canoe with far more metal welded onto the bow and stern than was ever needed, though since it was a boy scout canoe at one time, I'm sure it was to prevent over damaging. Luckily my canoe was ok. The womans' car....not so much.

I decided after that, that I was going to head home and not risk being on the road anymore that day. I was done with driving anywhere for the day.

The next day we had plans to hunt the Gulf for redheads with a friend of mine.

I had to give Louise a talkin to cuz the spinning wing decoy sure was taking a shining to her.

It was a very blustery day out there too. And also my black dogs' first introduction to BIG water and ROUGH water. A far cry from the hunting in central florida hydrilla flats. But the ducks seemed to like to fly around in the windy weather.

Steve very quickly had his limit. And though Drake had his first visit to the Gulf, he was no less enthusiastic with his retrieves.

And then he was ready for more

It took me a little longer, but I eventually did it with one shot.

The decoys were close, so the birds were trying to come in even closer, which made for short quick retrieves.

Which was good, because the wind was getting worse as the day wore on. My friend Barry had to go help play Coast Guard to help some guys who swamped their layout boat and they couldn't get it into their boat without swamping their tender boat. The front was coming on strong and hard

Drake still was ready to go. He doesn't get limits.

Especially when there are birds still flying by

But I had my limit and Steve had his and there was no more shooting to be done.

So a good first weekend with Louise. There will be more of her visit to FL later

What a wonderful day Dani, thanks for sharing it with us. I love those blustery days - a little ice would have made it perfect.

To bad about Truck (BTW - do you have a name for (it/her/him)? Did you have a lot of damage? I've hit a couple of deer, one caused $2500 in damage 25 years ago and the other $32 four years ago - both deer were dead.

Cans and Red Heads, doesn't get much better.

Dani, Now you have the first deer crash issue over you can really haul over the back roads. Are there any issues introducing a dog to salt water?

Sorry 'bout the deer. Happens all the time here. I've hit three or four, my Wife hit two so far...

Looks like a pretty good time with Louise. As someone above previously stated- Cans and Redheads, doesn't get any better than that!

I hope she makes it up here safely. I'm planning on giving here a workout on Virginia's East Coast. Weather permitting, I hope to hunt five or six days with her. We have plans to not only hunt the creeks and marshes, but also hit the Chesapeake Bay for a day, and out to the "inlet" for Sea Ducks once or twice.

As usual Dani, you wrote a great story to go along with those awesome photos. I never get tired of pictures! Thanks for reporting, my hope is that we can have just a bit of your luck when we venture out. Been a long time since I've bagged a Redhead or a Canvasback.

Ahhhh ohhhhh......

I was supposed to send her to you this weekend? I thought I had her for the New Year's.

I'm blaming Chuck on this one since he didn't tell me when/where to send her.

Steve

The box left Merritt Island Tuesday. Scheduled for delivery by 10:30 am Friday morning via FedEx.

If you need the tracking number Jon let me know and I'll send it to you.

That was just great, Dani. Thanks so much. By the way, how cold was it?
Sure liked all those pictures.

Dani - I heard through a mutual friend that you might have picked up some "bad" water-swatting habits on your last AL trip... tell your purist photographer that we just call that a money shot. Great pics btw.

Dani & Steve~

That fine tale sure got my Christmas off to a fine start! Wonderful photos as always. I need Drake to tell my partner's lab how to pose.

All the best,

SJS

Great pics, thanks for sharing!
I hope to get out Monday for my first big water redhead hunt of the year.

Pete-

Yup there is a name for my truck.....we call it The Short Bus.....it's a yellow and white FJ Cruiser....actually kinda looks like a short bus

As far as what the damage is, I haven't yet had a chance to get it to a body shop for the insurance estimate....too much traveling for the holidays and work to have that done...but that is on the agenda....can't imagine it'll be "cheap" since i'm going to need a new bumper and likely a new quarter panel ....

Tom-

this is actually the second deer I've hit with The Short Bus....you'd think I'd learn....clearly not. Introducing Drake to the salt water wasn't a huge issue. But introducing him to it on a rough and windy day, he really wasn't sure what to make of the two foot waves and white caps that were out there....he was swimming around like he forgot how to swim. Eventually he 'leveled out' in the swimming department. It was definitely a learning experience for him, and one we'll work on since I'm sure it won't be his last big water, rough water experience. The only other issues that really have to be taken into consideration is where you hunt the dog. Out there it's predominately sandy bottomed, but there are some oyster bar areas where you don't want to hunt your dog. Not worth the risk of slicing up feet and legs and dealing with lots of blood and potential infection. At least in my opinion. That's why I never hunted Drake around the salt in Jax. Because EVERYWHERE out in the salt there was oyster bed galore.

Al-

How cold was it....hmmmmmmm cold enough that this little FL girl was wearing two layers of thermals and had foot and hand warmers stuffed in my boots and contemplating an insulated cushion to sit on when I'm sitting in my aluminum canoe....the morning I hit my deer luckily there was no wind because it was about 33 degrees out...

Kyle-

I was told those weren't "bad" habits....but actually were "good" habits. Hmmmmmmmmmmm I'm gonna have to start rethinking what I was told after you say "bad"....

Thanks y'all. I'm glad y'all enjoyed the pictures and the story. Hope everyone had a great Christmas
