Well Louise showed up safely and I had to agree with Steve. When we saw the pictures, we thought...ooooohhhhhhh what a cute little lady. Then when she showed up, got her out of her box and we thought WOW. She's a big lady. That's what a Victoria's Secret model would look like if she were a REAL woman with curves.
The first hunt was a very quick hunt and very eventful. On the way out to the hunting spot, not very far from my house, I hit a deer with my truck. Bashed up my bumper pretty good and the blasted thing got up and ran away, flipping me the bird as he did so. But onto the hunting spot we went.
It was COLD. Not much flying. Even with a mile and a half paddle to the spot, and thus a mile and a half back to the truck, we were back in the truck and heading out by 9. But it sure wasn't a bad day. Very slow, but somewhat productive with a bird each.
It was decided that since it was so early, I wanted to go see if there were ducks on some lakes around town that I haven't seen before. So off we went. On the way back from the second lake, I was sitting at the stop light and BAM. Some woman runs into the back of my canoe, which is kept on a boat trailer. This was the first time I'd ever not cursed my canoe being a big over-engineered aluminum canoe with far more metal welded onto the bow and stern than was ever needed, though since it was a boy scout canoe at one time, I'm sure it was to prevent over damaging. Luckily my canoe was ok. The womans' car....not so much.
I decided after that, that I was going to head home and not risk being on the road anymore that day. I was done with driving anywhere for the day.
The next day we had plans to hunt the Gulf for redheads with a friend of mine.
I had to give Louise a talkin to cuz the spinning wing decoy sure was taking a shining to her.
It was a very blustery day out there too. And also my black dogs' first introduction to BIG water and ROUGH water. A far cry from the hunting in central florida hydrilla flats. But the ducks seemed to like to fly around in the windy weather.
Steve very quickly had his limit. And though Drake had his first visit to the Gulf, he was no less enthusiastic with his retrieves.
And then he was ready for more
It took me a little longer, but I eventually did it with one shot.
The decoys were close, so the birds were trying to come in even closer, which made for short quick retrieves.
Which was good, because the wind was getting worse as the day wore on. My friend Barry had to go help play Coast Guard to help some guys who swamped their layout boat and they couldn't get it into their boat without swamping their tender boat. The front was coming on strong and hard
Drake still was ready to go. He doesn't get limits.
Especially when there are birds still flying by
But I had my limit and Steve had his and there was no more shooting to be done.
So a good first weekend with Louise. There will be more of her visit to FL later
