Tom,
"Bob" Snow or Ron Snow? (I'm not familiar with "Bob" Snow) I took carving classes in '83 from Ron Snow. His brother, Doug, used to carve and teach classes also. Their Father, Walter, used to carve with Ben Schmidt and you see some of Ben's style with the stamping of feathers on those birds (looks like you have stamped feathers on those birds).
All three fellas carved lots of birds. Great find.

lou,

do you know what they used to "stamp" the feathers?

Hi Kris,
Yes, as stated above, sometimes bent wire. What we had was pieces of files that were ground, at an angle, to the shape of a feather, and then stamped in with a hammer. Paint would the be brushed on and wiped off...leaving paint in the "feather edging".
We did several birds like that, including some I made molds from. The files were longer lasting and held their shape better than wire.
This idea was primarily used by Ben Schmidt...etc. We learned it through Ron.

Decoy stamps. Doug Snow had a set of feather stamps made for me back in the early 80's. Still have them in the tool chest They are hard steel and will never wear out. There are a variety of sizes. They work well!
I'm not doing much carving now, so might be interested in getting them to someone that will use them.

Small world Tom. I just was visiting with a gentleman tonight picking up a gun he worked on for me.When I dropped the gun off I mentioned I carved and he said he did as well as well as collected. Today when I went back he had one of his decoys sitting for me to see. He learned from the snow family. He is 71 years old so I don't know which snow but he had apparently been given blocks cut on there patterns along with heads. He carved his own rig of 100 but since has given all but two of them away. He had one remaining un carved block, head, and keel. He thought I might want to take a pattern off them so he sent them home with me along with one of his remaining decoys to make patterns off of incase I ever wanted to carve a few. Ill have to get a picture of his decoy tomorrow to share.

Took me long enough.
Here are the pictures I promised.

Something to be said for these old decoys. No sealer just rustolium over the wood and lots of it. Great gunner.
