Maine Moose Hunt 2013

Very nice Troy, that is some purty area there. I've been wanting to make a trip up there for a long time. I really enjoyed the pics.

The only thing that would impress me more is if you could have dropped the bull right in the back of your truck!

How were the grouse numbers?

The grouse numbers were very poor Tod, but high wind and rain is not the most conducive weather for sightings either. I have heard better things about the area around Moosehead Lake. I was actually surprised on how little small game we saw. In four days of being in the area, only one rabbit, two ruffed grouse, no spruce grouse, we did see 6 or so woodcock and that was about it. I'm sure though, that well trained beagles and bird dogs would change those numbers quickly.

That's just awseome! Not just the getting a crack at a big bull but the whole planning and scouting and good friends part. Passing up a dinky bull isn't as easy as it sounds, but it sure paid off this time. It was really considerate of him to die right on the road there too, and I bet you guys got the meat out super clean.

Nice job Troy,

Mike

Thanks! What are the rules on what is a legal bull in ME? Just curious.

As defined by the Maine inland fish and wildlife;

A bull only permit holder may shoot one bull moose (a “bull moose” means a moose with
antlers longer in size than their ears).

The zone I had (zone 2, which is in the top center of the state) will allow 225 bulls in the Sept week that I had, another 225 in the Oct. week and then 100 cows in the Oct week and 250 cows in the Nov. season totaling 800 from that zone if all were successful.

Cool, that makes it pretty easy to tell (and shows what a great bull yours is), less complicated than Alaska for sure.

congrats on a great hunt, that is a very nice moose.

24 yrs and counting for me on the lottery

actually made the reserve list this year and got my call last week, yet they only offered a cow permit in zone 3 so I made the tough decision and declined.

hopefully next year.

I hear you Tom. I always just put "bulls only". With the new bonus point system you will be drawn soon. Zone 3 is a good one also. My cousin drew a bull tag there a few years back, shot him from tree stand, another great hunt there as well.

Based on all the sub legal bulls being shot this year it would be easier to just go to a draw permit system and allow any bull. It would generate huge lawsuits for a few years, but if the idiots don't stop killing young bulls there won't be much left to get to a 50 inches and three or four brow tines.

Even though this Maine bull is less than 50 inches wide he would be legal in any unit in AK due to the four brow tines on his right side.

Nice hunt Troy,
Had a friend shoot one up there as a nonresident a couple years ago. His bull was about the size of yours and was the second largest shot that year. The three of them spent a day getting most of the animal to a road so you did SUPER on both counts.
Very nicely done, John

WOW that is awesome! I'd love to see a moose someday. Not sure I would want to shoot one, but I do like skulls and antlers so maybe one day

but that sure sounds like a great hunting trip. Congratulations.
