Maine Sea Duck Guides?

My buddy and I want to do a Maine Sea Duck hunt for Eiders and Long Tails (Oldsquaw). I have hunted sea ducks here in Long Island, NY many times out of a boat... we shoot Oldsquaw and Scoter, but have no Eiders. We are looking for a guide who provides a little bit of a different "Maine" experience... I have heard there are some guides who use a Lobster boat as their "mothership", then bring you to rocky islands along the coast. You sit on the islands with a rig of decoys in front of you and shoot the birds from there. Does anyone know of a guide who offers this type of hunt?

They don't use lobster boats (20' Lund Alaskans ) but you can hunt from half tide ledges or from a boat blind with Rising Sun Outfitters. I hunted with them in 05 and will be back again in 08. Awesome hunt and a great guide. Give Ernie a call or send him an email and he can hook you up. The website address is www.risingsunoutfitters.com

I know a great guide here in RI. if you are interested let me know . We shoot Eider , scoter and old sqaw here in RI.

Hey BJC,

Did you hunt with Chuck and Lou this year? I am good friends with both of them. They work hard to get you on some birds, that is for sure.

check out Todd Jackson at www.seaducks.net. I have never hunted with him but i know people who have and they said he was great. I have met him and shoot with him at a 5 stand event in the spring.

good luck

Hi Nate, I hunted with them on November 30th. Was a nice day and a great hunt but the flights were a little slow. Chuck and Lou busted their butts trying to get us on the birds, we had three decoys resets and moves. We were able to get a few nice birds though. I was supposed to hunt with them today but the weather forced a cancel.

I've hunted with Todd Jackson at Penobscott bay outfitters and would highly recomend him to anyone.

Go to Maineguides.org and use the search feature and type in seaducks. That will give you a list of a bunch of Maine Guides that specialize in Sea Ducks. I live in Maine on the coast and have never seen the mothership type operation you describe. There is really no need. At least not in the areas I've hunted All of the Sea Duck species are accessable within a reasonable run from a boat launch. The guides will provide you with a safe and memorable experience.
